Kogan has announced a 55 inch ultra HD TV for under $1000

So the story was published here and is a little scant on the details of the TV, but a 55 inch UHD TV for $999, has my attention.

I couldn't find anything on the Kogan website and the article says the TV should be available in January. Now the wait for the details begins …

  • Sounds nice, but I'll stick with Plasma until something better comes along for smooth motion and true blacks.

  • Whats the point though?

No Movies either downloaded, FTA, DVD or BluRay can play this defination
Unless you want to use it as a huge monitor

That was the same argument used for the first full HD (1080p) TVs over 5 years ago - no FTA etc content was full 1080p then. Yes, there might be none or very limited options for UHD right now, but do you think that things will stay this way…?

With Kogan's announcement, a UHD TV is now priced comparatively to a full HD (1080p) TV …food for thought …no?

      • Not true

Seven HD was broadcast at 1080i over 6 years ago
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_HD

BluRay was released 11 years ago
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc

Ultra HD movies will be huge in size. I dont think there is room or allocation in the TV FTA spectrum for transmission.
There is no prototype or plans to disperse with BluRay atm either.

yes, and to my point …content was limited …that's what people were arguing back then!

Seven HD was just a loop of pictures from memory and a couple of programs, so again the naysayers argued that content was limited! Blurays were competing with HD DVD and the cost of a bluray player/ HD DVD player was in the thousands 11 years ago - a factor that made them inaccessible to the wider public.

I can't see how you can go wrong with UHD when it is priced comparatively to a full HD screen (if you are in the market for a new TV). UHD will still play your full HD content and as UHD becomes more popular you will get more content. I don't see where the downside is…?

There is a huge difference between limited and non existant.

Sure when 1080p TVs came out there was a lot less FTA and blu rays HD content as now. But there were already available.

However NOTHING is available for 4K. and NOTHING is planned to be coming out soon.

Whilst you expect a TV to last at least 5 years I doubt there will be anything to do with your 4K in 5 years that you cant do with a 1080p today.

You are better off not wasting money on a 4K and instead get a decent refresh rate like a 200Mhz TV.

        • nothing now or planned…that's a bold statement that can be corrected in 2 seconds with a google search! Here you go …. i'll do the finger work for you. And that was just the first cab off the rank from a quick google search

        • Pity your google skills were not up to scratch on your earlier statements about when 1080p TVs came out.

But lets look at that link.
Its not FTA. That is unlikely to happen anywhere because of bandwidth constraints
No BluRay or other physical media. Again nothing planned or prototype to do this

Streaming would require a solid fast internet. Perhaps if you are on the NBN on a 100MB link it might happen.

Anyway if you are thinking about buying a 4K TV read this
          http://www.tomsguide.com/us/time-to-buy-4k-tvs,news-17388.ht…

        • My google skills get better with the more beers i drink ; ) Besides, what particular part of my earlier statement did you not like? I still stand by the fact that people used the same argument when full HD Tvs first hit our shores.

Cardz do you honestly believe that manufacturers of TVs who have been in the business longer than you and I would waste their time and money on a concept that they think will flop? If you look around you just about everyone is trying to get more pixels …whether it's a camera or an iPad.

With my last point you said nothing was available, which you are wrong about! Sure their maybe nothing available with FTA at the moment, but who knows what will happen in the future.

The Tom's guide article you reference mentions price as a major reason not to purchase (not the case with the Kogan model) and then talks about the limited content available now and how we will need to wait for upgrades/fixes as the technology becomes more popular. The article then concludes that price again is the reason not purchase now, but to rather wait. Price is taken out of the equation with the Kogan screen.

        • "No BluRay or other physical media. Again nothing planned or prototype to do this"

Have a read of your own Tom's article, it clearly talks about Sony and their 4K media player so there are things planned! It wouldn't make sense for Sony and the like to make UHD screens and have no content for them!

        • Why Ultra HD 4K TVs are still stupid

Three TV improvements more worthwhile than Ultra HD 4K

Ok, so I guess all the manufacturers and the like at CES 2014 got it wrong then …?

  • No mention on the refresh rate, could be 30Hz like the one from amazon at UHD resolution. I don't really see the appeal to UHD tbh, see here you need to be super close to even see the difference between 1080p and like Cardz said, there is basically NO content for it, and the data rate needed is not going to be readily available in the near future.

    • Depends on the HDMI version, but yeah, no mention of that either.

      • Stats on Kogan's site say it is HDMI 1.4

    • Agree it needs to be 60hz+, else it is useless.

Wonder if you could use it as a PC monitor. 50" UHD = 4x 25" 1080 monitors.

    • Actually on the very large screens 80"+ I think it will be very useful. I remember seeing and HD 104" plasma and it was terrible quality due to the resolution. As they become more popular content will be available but I wouldn't spend money now until the technology becomes more mature.

  • Might wait for an 8K model ;)

  • just found an article with some pics here. Shows some of the ports etc, but still no firm details on specs

  • How do you know this won't be a "Inspired by UHDTV" bait and switch like the usual kogan sales ethics?

    • Well I now know as it is advertised on Kogan's website! on Pre-sale for $999 for delivery in May 2014

  • 100hz, UHD, - all buzz words.

If you are looking for a TV, do abit of research, check the reviews. Real world ghosting/ colour/ contrast/ viewing angles is whats not meantioned on a 1 page spec sheet - and what really matters.
