iPad 3rd Gen - out of warranty - Sound only via headphones

Hi,

I have an Ipad and just a few days back the sound from it is gone.

None of the apps, youtube etc will have any sound. I can hear it if I plug in the headphones.

I have googled a fair bit about it and followed the suggestions like rebooting with the power+home button pressed. Checking for mute etc.,but no success.

I was trying to contact apple, but they charge $39 minimum for the tech support as my Ipad is out of warranty.

Can anyone help me to the fix for this problem or how to approach apple?

Thanks

EDIT : Found the receipt and it was purchased on 11/07/2012

EDIT : Apple store visit has been booked for Sunday morning. I will post an update after they have looked at it.

EDIT : Been to Apple store and they replaced my iPad. No questions asked. Very impressed.

Do you live near an apple store? I just got my ipad 3 replaced free of charge by apple a week ago and it was also out of warranty.
All apple products now have 2 year warranties.

    http://www.apple.com/au/legal/statutory-warranty/

    • Not too far from Apple store. I can definitely go and talk to them.

In your case, did you have to bring the proof of purchase?

Also, did they give you and Ipad 3 or some latest variant of it?

      • I didn't bring any proof of purchase however I did buy it from the apple online store. They just gave me the same model ipad 3 without the laser engraving on the back.

        • Ok. Thanks for that. Mine was purchased from the good guys. I will take my receipt just in case they want to see it.

        • Hopefully you get a new iPad and not a refurbished one.

Why would that matter as long as it works?

  • common problem to the 3rd? I had the exactly same problem and sold it cheap because apple wants to charge me $280 to fix this shit

    • If only I knew about it earlier…

  • Take it to your local "asian temp store in middle of shopping centre phone case store".
He can solder back whats lose for alot less than apple want to look at it.

    • Probably best to first go to the apple store and see what they can do and then to the "phone case store".

  • How far out of warranty? I'd suggest researching your state's fair trading laws, you may still be entitled to a remedy.

You can go to Apple Store and ask them nicely if they can repair it for free. Don't call them - phone support is a different thing. If they refuse to repair it for free, then it makes sense to mention your consumer rights under the ACL and expected life of the product which is over 1 year. This probably should be enough.

Most likely you don't need to have a proof of purchase since your iPad was registered in their warranty database right after it was first activated.

  • Get wireless speakers and play all ur sound from them? I not really a solution, just a suggestion.

    • I would, but this Ipad is for my son who happens to have Autism. He will not understand it.

Tell the people at the Apple Store the iPad is for your Autistic son and you would simply use a wireless speaker solution if you thought he could manage it but you don't think he could. Chances are excellent that they will give you a replacement iPad at that point.

        • Good suggestion, and hope apple is willing to replace you a new one.

        • Thanks guys. I will go to apple store this evening. I have located the receipt as well. Will see what they have to say.

I would suggest cleaning out the headphone slot first, just blow on it with some compressed air to get the dust and stuff out.

  • Just went to the store and they need an appointment to look at the iPad. So no luck today.

    • Interested to see how you go, good luck

      • I will post once I have my meeting with the Apple Genius (BTW that's what they call the techs).

  • Disclaimer: don't blame me for any damage. If your not comfortable with doing the fix then take it to a shop.

So the problem is actually in the dock connector not the headphone jack or speakers. The pins are shorting probably due to moisture and dust causing the iPad to think it's docked on an external iPad/iPod Dock.

    Get some isopropyl alcohol.

    Turn your iPad off.

Use the alcohol and toothbrush. Lightly scrub the connector. Let it dry out (isopropyl drys quickly).

Turn your iPad on and try the speakers.

Repeat a few times if it still doesn't work.

    Hope this helps!

    • Sounds like it might work. However as has been suggested by others regarding warranty I will try my luck with apple first. If they want to charge money in excess of $50 to fix it I will try what you have suggested.

      • Good luck with it.

You could always try a dry toothbrush first if your worried about the alcohol.

        • That I did try after reading on some forums already. Haven't had any success. Was a bit wary about trying the alcohol. If it is not fixed after the visit to apple store, I will surely try alcohol.

The consumer Guarantee act probably applies to this case.

Check out http://www.consumerlaw.gov.au/content/the_acl/downloads/cons… 40 pages but easy to read. On Page 11 they have an example..

    For example:

    A consumer buys a plasma
    television for $6000. It stops
    working two years later. The
    supplier tells the consumer they
have no rights to repairs or another
remedy as the television was only
    under the manufacturer’s warranty
for 12 months. The supplier says
    the consumer should have bought
    an extended warranty, which would
    have given five years’ cover.
    A reasonable consumer would
expect more than two years’ use
    from a $6000 television. Under
    the consumer guarantees, the
    consumer therefore has a statutory
right to a remedy on the basis that
the television is not of acceptable
quality. The supplier must provide a
    remedy free of charge.
This may also amount to misleading
    a consumer about their rights.

ie You purchased your ipad in July 2012…so would expect it to reasonably last for a number of years. not under 2 years.

ALSO…. I was reading my PDS for my Westpac Black credit card. It says that I get an automatic 2 year extended manufacturers warranty for items purchased with the card. If you purchased your ipad with your card, check its terms and conditions…you might also have cover via that channel too.

  • As everyone is saying, Apple will most probably help you here (in a store).

This is what we get when we pay the premium, very helpful support (even a few months out of warranty).

  • I just had my iPad gen3 purchased mar2012 with the front the front camera not working replaced today at the apple store. All done under 10min.

No arguing, no mention of consumer guarantees, no nothing

This might be the same problem… I can repeat the same fault fairly reliably.

I docked my device (ie. Into a car cradle) and lost the sound afterward. It took me a while to work out that I needed to re-dock the device, put the volume up and then it would work.

The IOS software got confused and assumed that I had muted the device. I could reboot, switch the mute switch on/off, factory reset and restore, etc - none of it worked.

In my case, I had a car cradle that bought me unstuck. If I powered off the car while the device was attached, I usually lost the sound. If I removed the device before I switched the car off, I would never have this problem.

Apple gave me the run-around on this one and said they'd never heard of it. I uncovered the fault (but not the solution) on Apple forums. This took me a while to solve.

Your fault may be different. Good luck with solving your problem (by whatever means).

  • My experience (YMMV)

I had this problem with an iPad 1 last year. One day, there was absolutely no sound. I did iOS resets etc, but it didn't help. I made a Genius appointment; they said I could pay $279 for a replacement iPad 1. I didn't think there was any point paying that much for a device that was no longer supported, so I left it. A couple of weeks later, the sound randomly returned.

I did nothing different to it for it to start working again, but it would be nice if it worked out that way for you too :)

  • Thanks all. The Apple store replaced the iPad with a new iPad 3rd gen.
