My first post.

I was on the lookout on the prices of XBOX 360 hard drives since I missed out on the JB deal. Useful for those who bought 4GB console cashback offer.

Is this really a bargain considering they've been routinely <$100?

    • It seems to be the cheapest available now, but it's worth mentioning that it might pay to wait for another deal which could be a bit cheaper.

Honestly im thinking of just buying a WD hdd and formatting it myself, The JB deal would be good as it included two games.

        • From what I've read, other non-MS HDD's only give you 32GB or am I missing something?

if you format a device as FAT32 under windows, the maximum partition size is 32GB. That's why you should use a third party tool like FAT32FORMATTER and you can then have partitions up to 3TB (I think is the max. I know I've formatted 2TB drives and they've been readable on both xbox and PS3)

        • Yeah its cheaper to buy a cheap 5 dollar caddy and 49 dollar 320gig hdd from msy put these together with a formatting tool and you have the same thing except you miss out on the NFS hot persuit and another game.

        • Thanks for that. Any tricks I need to know?

Can I use an USB2 HDD? I have a spare 320GB Lacie drive.

      • I'm new to this. What sort of price can we expect?

          $50
Previous deals have had it at this price.

I got the JB deal a few days ago to use on my $79 Xbox.
Although I was wondering, is it possible to install games on an external hard drive if I plug one in?
I plugged one in and it showed that it would be formatted in 32GB blocks, but wasn't showing how the 32GB blocks could be used.

    • Yes you can install on external media.

  • At that price I would rather risk it getting a wd and flashing that instead.
I haven't the need for a hard drive though thanks to my 32gb USB.

JB what a ripoff - JB were selling the 320GB HDD for $69 the other week… seems to be a massive markup

man it's been so long since I did it.. but I do recall I bought a case from dealextreme and installed my own WD HDD.

youtube has lots of do it yourself vids to use ANY hdd (you need to flash the firmware):

from memory I took the HDD out of the clip on the top enclosure from my white xbox 360, then put the HDD in the enclosure for the slim.

Not sure what you mean by JB being a rip off here, especially given that this 'deal' is ~$35 more than the previous deal.

Some may say that JB's offer at $69, including 2 games (value potentially negligible), is a good deal compared to ~$50 for a hard drive & caddy + time & effort (amount of which varies person to person) + potential to brick the system.

      My 2c.

      • hi,

no I wasn't referring to the JB (initial) price of $169 for the XBOX 360 console (before they hoiked it up another $20 to $189) - I was referring to JB selling the 320GB HDD for the slim at $69 on the same day, and now the price is $123 (or something, can't be bothered to look it up now). That's what I was referencing by way of nice markup JB.
