Is it advisable to pre-pay the meal before boarding? It seems like they have different menus for different flights. I am going to Hong Kong stopping over Kuala Lumpur. Do they accept Australian dollars for ordering meal? Any suggestion on which meal to order and to avoid? TIA.

do get it, the food is alot better than most (if you like some spice).
I only had one and two dollar aussie coins and credit cards when we went Syd to KL early 2013, they don't accept either.
and they wouldn't give free water. they'd give my gf one half cup of boiling hot water from a jug or something (must of been for the noodles and tea?) and that was after about 6 hrs of flying.
so now I always pre-book. That experience was absolutely disgusting.
No airline will accept coins. Neither will money changers :)
And there's free (drinking) water in the toilets on board.
Yes, they do run out of food if you're down the back, and they especially run out of vegetarian options if you're on a flight with a lot of Hindu people.
who the (profanity) would drink out a filthy toilet tap?
the fact was I had gold coins and I had a credit card, they refused all of this.
we were dying of thirst for 8 hours. in the end my partner was really (profanity) dehydrated and they gave her 60ml of boiling hot water.
I had no ringgits, because, who the (profanity) would figure you need them flying out of Sydney ?
Unfortunately selling water has become another way of drip pricing/skimming off the customers. Free drinking water should be a basic right when 'trapped' on an aircraft for more than an hour or 2. Some airlines prefer credit card (was it Jetstar??). Emirates cabin crew even tell you not to drink out of the drinking fountains on their flights. I certainly would not drink out of any water source in the toilets either. To show you how intransigent AirAsia cabin crew are, I was entitled to a choice of tea or coffee with a meal. I chose Tea! They said "unfortunately we have run out of tea, will you have coffee" I said "No, I don't drink coffee, I want tea" They said (With Attitude)"we have run out of tea so you will have coffee!" I said "no I won't have coffee, I don't drink coffee. What else is there?" They said " you cannot change, you can only choose tea or coffee" I said "well I choose tea and you are changing me because you are choosing coffee for me and I don't want coffee" Just then another crew member intervened with a pot of tea. Lazy pr@*ks were too lazy to go and make another pot of tea.
Pre-book… they dont always have a selection of all meals in the in-flight menu..
The uncle chin's chicken and rice is quite good! also japanese chicken terriyaki was quite good too!+1 for the chicken rice! But Nasi lemak is still my fave :)
Another +1 for nasi lemak!
I always pre-book. I did with 2 meals for myself if I am travelling alone. But with my wife they don't let me do that. Max is 1 meal per person when traveling with more than one person booked in one name. eg wife and myself booked in my name. Only one meal each per flight.
I always pre-book. As I book a lot of my flights 9 months ahead when on promo, I always add baggage and meals about one week before the actual flight. (If you have to cancel your flight there is no refund on these costs, and so why add to the risk) For flights Sydney to Kuala Lumpur or back I book 2 meals each way. The portions are not huge, but value/quality is good enough! Note some meals only come with water, and some only come with tea/coffee, and this is not negotiable. So I always include a meal with tea/coffee so I can have coffee when I wake up from an overnight flight.
My pre-booked nasi lemak air asia meal had 2 dead flying ants in it. I showed the air hostess and she apologised but didn't offer a replacement or any freebies! I still ate it and didn't get sick…
Yep definitely pre-book (just a few days before departure is perfect). +1 Satay chicken skewers!
pre-book meals.
if you have kids then don't book the kids meals. they are disgusting -hotdogs.
pre-book an android tablet if you're not taking your own.
take plenty of snacks.
take plenty of cash (notes) for drinks.I pre book our meals but the kids just get noodles as they don't like anything on the menu. We usually take our own water- those fold up bottles that you fill up after security at the bubblers . It means you don't have to wait for drinks service.
The kids meals are gross - pure plastic but we buy them a subway at the airport and they have half then and half on the plane. You could take your own sandwiches . We always take our own snacks and have never had an issue.
I usually get the nasi lemak .
I love the nasi lemak :) If you like Malaysian food, it's definitely worth a try!! In fact, I've loved all of the Malay options (mmm… curry) but have always found the Western options to be pretty horrible (surprise, surprise!).
Pre-purchasing does save you a little money. And I mean a little. Like $1. Sometimes it's better to give yourself something to do whilst on board and make the decision then.
Yes, they accept Australian dollars for flights departing Australia. They won't accept AUD for KL-HK. But you can withdraw ringgit at the airport from an ATM easily enough if you need to. If you've got a really long stopover at the KL airport, consider heading to KLIA for better shopping (and more things to do). Otherwise there's a food hall outside the AirAsia terminal that's good fun for people watching :)
