Quick Warranty Question - MSY

Hi Guys,
Purchased an SSD from MSY in Fyshwick late last year. Crapped out about a month later, and i have only just gotten around to claiming warranty on it.

As i live nowhere near canberra and just happened to be there when i needed a drive, does anyone know if i could return it to their Sydney store? I have the receipt…

I emailed MSY Fyshwick, but we all know how reliable they are at replying to emails…

I can RMA the drive through plextor however it has to be manually through support as their RMA system doesnt support us yet… But i'd prefer to just take half a day to catch the train to sydney and swap it out then waiting weeks..

Thanks

  • Answer seem to be here if you trust it: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1374800

  • Honestly, when it comes to drives, unless they're DOA or die within a month or so, I just RMA through the manufacturer.

Most shops like MSY are just going to send off the drive to the distributor anyway, so you might as well cut out the middle man & save yourself some time; especially if the retailer drags their feet on RMAs! :)

    • This. For a one month old product I wouldn't expect to get a replacement on the spot; it'd be faster for you to RMA yourself.

      • Plextor seems pretty unhappy to RMA it and id rather just take it back for a refund if possible. They told me twice when i first enquired to take it back to the retailer before they finally begrudgingly told me to send them all my details which i of course, didnt do because i got busy with other commitments.

        • highly doubt you will get money back

The retailer bares the burden of replacing it, they are an agent for the manufacturer. Whether or not they give you an on the spot replacement/refund depends on when you bought it and the price you paid.

If its still under warranty then it depends somewhat on the warranty terms. However If its a major failure within a reasonable time soon after purchase then you can choose replacement or refund.
they cannot force you to accept a repair or replacement.

if its out of warranty then price & purchase date are relevant to the question of reasonable period of hassle free use.

I would ring retailer and tell them you just want refund…as long as you have receipts you should be ok.and yes you should be able to return it to any branch.

    For major problems with goods

    You can:

reject the goods and get a refund, reject the goods and get an identical replacement, or one of similar value if reasonably available, orkeep the goods and get compensation for the drop in value caused by the problem.

You get to choose, not the supplier or manufacturer.

A major problem with goods is when:

a reasonable person would not have bought the goods if they had known about the problem or.the goods are significantly different from the description, sample or demonstration model shown to you or.the goods are substantially unfit for their normal purpose and cannot easily be made fit, within a reasonable time or.the goods are substantially unfit for a purpose that you told the supplier about, and cannot easily be made fit within a reasonable time.

    For minor problems with goods:

If the problem can be repaired within a reasonable time, you cannot immediately reject the goods and demand a refund.

You must give the supplier a chance to fix the problem. The supplier may choose to:

provide a refund/replace the item. It is the supplier’s responsibility to return goods to the manufacturer for repair. If the cost of repairing the goods is more than the value of the goods, they can offer you a replacement instead.

if they play difficult just a quick email to dept fair trading does wonders :)

    Cheers

      nice post Pookie

MSY have often been notorious for claiming you have to send it back yourself
(this is generally because they often don't use a local distributor so local supplier warranty is void)
but this is just not the case and at one point they had to have a notice
up in all their stores to that effect as they have been prosecuted several times

      • Thank you posgear :)

happy to help where I can..

  • I got a DOA SSD from Pascoe Vale MSY, tried to return it to the Cheltenham branch but no dice (alas my charms, they did nothing). There was a conversation about RMA / trying to get money back on the spot, I was informed that I should probably be able to get my money back on the spot without too much hassle from the original place of purchase.

Soon after, I got to Pascoe Vale just as it was opening (as naturally, there were lines ahead and quickly behind me) and to their credit, they tested it on the spot and gave my money back.

Lesson learnt: don't buy SSDs far away from where you live :)
