  • Nice find. Fly dates seem to start 31 Jan, with $168 "promo" outbound fares availability on at least 1 or 2 days per week into late March.

Perth to KL is soooo cheap!

  • Seems like air asia have now closed the loophole by letting you book two individual one way fares, if you do them single from mel to kl the price hikes up around $70

    • But this is a return deal, no mention of one-way in the post.

  • I bought return tickets MEL/KUL from 25 May - 15 Jun 2014 for AUD$278, taxes included but no checked luggage or meal. Hoping to score the UTO Upgrade and get them for free. Otherwise, it'll be me and my trusty old backpack with a packet of peanuts.

    • With which airline?

      • you've never flight with air asia, have you?

          No, why?

Air Asia flights are typically between AUD200 and AUD400 return (Malaysia - Australia) whenever on sale. Optiontown is a lottery type system for options such as a flat bed seat (equivalent of business class on any discount airline) or an empty seat next to you. For a discounted additional cost (like an "add-on"), you can opt in to this program: http://www.airasia.com/au/en/inflight-comforts/optiontown.pa…

Using the options above as examples, if a flat bed seat is never sold at its full price and you have paid the discounted Optiontown for one, you will be allocated that seat. Otherwise that discounted add-on is refunded to you.

Same situation regarding the empty seat next to you - if you have paid the discounted add-on and the flight isn't filled, you will be allocated a seat with an empty one next to you. Otherwise, you will be refunded.

I'm pretty sure you will be emailed about Optiontown once you have booked and paid for your ticket on Air Asia. Also see this discussion here: http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g1-i10702-k5970920-A…

Let me know if you have any questions!

Source: born and bred in Malaysia and filial piety requires return trips every 1 to 2 years.

        • The refund is less a $10 fee so you don't quite get all of your money back. I've never missed out on the 4 times I've done the Optiontown flatbed upgrade though so it's worth the small risk. Very good seat for the price you pay!

        • Not $10 but RM10 non-refundable deposit, yes, I think that amounts to around $3.40 in AUD.

Sorry, should have clarified that it was with AirAsia.

    • You might not be notified of the UTO decision until 3 hours before(yes 3 even though they say minimum of 4 hours) And so, if you miss out on the upgrade, you will 'pay through the nose' for baggage at the airport. I have missed out on the upgrade many many times, and have snagged it a couple of times. I always book and pay for baggage about 3 days before. And so, if you need checked baggage, I do not think that it is worth the gamble to not book and pay for it, and expect the UTO.

      • You are absolutely correct. I've been pretty lucky with the UTOs and been upgraded about 80% of my flights over the last 3 years and received the congratulatory e-mail at least a day in advance.
On my outbound journey I usually travel with my backpack only and need the baggage on the return leg.
Do note that if you change your flight plans, the UTO does not transfer with you and if you are approved for your original flight you will still have to pay for it. Optiontown and the airlines are totally separate entities. That happened to me last year.

I need cheap flights to either PER > DPS or PER > CGK next Christmas. I love the AirAsia sales because I can get Jetstar to pricebeat. Hopefully in the next few months that will happen.

    • -1

Sorry for the neg, but Jetstar is a shit airline compared to AirAsia.

      • Why's that? I see no big difference between the two.

  • -2

lol i was like kewl… i can pay for that and bring mates…
    oh wait $262 is just flights… Lawl…

    be beggars once in Malaysia…

  • These were cheaper a couple of months ago :) though still a great price!

  • I got them a few months back when they were syd to KUL for $169 there and 100 ish on the way back.

KL is pretty gross, get a cheap flight out of there on cebupacific or airasia!

I booked seats 7D and the one next to it in the quiet zone right behind the premium seats,

is it worth doing Optiontown even though ive pre paid for baggage, meals, premium seats already? I wouldn't mind a flat bed

    • Yes, it's worth it.

  • Hi guys, excuse my ignorance if I don't understand this, but airasia's page only says they are one way fares to destinations in Malaysia or other tourist places. Where does it say they are return?

I am interested in April - May return MEL-KL. Well I need to go to Mumbai India, which I might find connection later.

    • +1

They usually only advertise the one way fares. Tightarse has just put in some random dates to find the return fares as these are generally more useful to Ozbargainers.

      • +1

        Well said donga!

  • I fly from KL to Melbourne on 30/12 and took the optiontown offer up to get a potential upgrade to business class which cost me around $152US at the time of booking (in Nov). I would strongly recommend it!
I arrived in KL on the day of my flight (as I flew in from elsewhere), had to check email to see if I got it, and to my suprise I was emailed 2hrs before the flight stating it was approved subject to check-in… and boy it was approved!!!!
I've flown business with Thai, American, BA before, but honestly this particular version of 'flatbed' with Airasia beats the rest, its a real flat bed, not a bullsh&t one like the others… they even give you a thick duvet (which you need doesn't matter on what season your flying from and to its always freezing on a long haul flight).
Would 110% recommend doing the upgrade whether you paid for the extra luggage or meals.
PS. I was a little sceptical at the start to around this sort of deal but hey it works!

    • It sounds to me like you were on a 'high' with getting the cheap upgrade. I slide down on their Premium Seats when trying to sleep. They are nowhere near horizontal. (I note that they are now calling them 'Business Class' - but this part of their plane is definitely NOT 'Business Class'). Business class seats on Vietnam Airlines, Malaysia Air. Emirates, and Thai are far better - but of course they cost a hell of a lot more!

  • sweet - just booked some tickets so I can fly to europe in april - much cheaper from KL as they don't have an easter black out on dates!

Just got back from an Adelaide -> KL return flight with Air Asia a week or so ago. I have to say Air Asia exceeded my expectations in many ways, seat size, leg room, air craft quality was very similar to say a modern Jetstar experience.

    Here are the downers:

    1) My family was intentionally placed randomly in the plane by their system, online computer check in forced to me change pre-allocated seats so we could all sit together, cost about $60. Nice trick by Air Asia sprung on us at the 11th hour. I was pretty annoyed as one of the random seat placements had our 2 year old son sitting 20 rows away by himself. I am sure I could have argued a point at the airport - but is it worth it when trying to enjoy a holiday?

    2) The meal service / drinks service is poor, the poor hosties who don't really speak english rush down the aisle at speed so they don't have to serve anyone (makes Jetstar and Virgin service look like it is for royalty) - so Bring your own food and drink or prepare to miss 2 rounds of drinks service while you blink. On the way back I was served my pre-puchased dinner meal at about 5am (after departing around 11pm) it was literally WAKE UP time for sloppy chicken and rice…. err that went in the bin.

    3) The Low Cost Terminal in KL (Their old freight terminal) is beyond a joke, I think they have a new terminal opening around mid year, until then. Be prepared to walk half way around the airport (on the outside in the heat) once you get off the plane, be prepared to "fight" for a baggage trolley, the locals literally run next to the trolley boys holding on to them, so by the time the trolleys get to the trolley bays they are all spoken for.

    4) Be prepared to wait about 45 mins for your bags at KL

    5) Be aware that there is some kind of "Taxi Booking Service" which requires you to line up for 30 mins for a ticket which you pay for, that then entitles you to then join the actual line for a taxi.

    6) Be prepared to line up for 60 minutes at immigration, we have a small child - he started freaking out after about 30 minutes and we were ushered through to a private immigration point and sped through - bad luck for the other 1,000 people (literally) waiting in the line.

    7) Toilets in the terminal are filthy even though they have wash room attendants, just due to the shear number of people using them, I was washing my hands while a local next to me was vomiting everywhere in the hand washing bowl… nice..

These things could have just been bad timing for me as I was flying during the holiday period, but some aspects of the experience at the terminal were shocking (even by 3rd world standards).

We traveled to another destination mid way though our trip and left using the KL traditional international terminal - that terminal is stunning, unfortunately not used by Air Asia

    • You seem like you're exaggerating a lot of what happened. I had similar things happen, but nowhere near the extent you say. Your mileage must have varied, but at the end of the day, it's a cheap ticket. Super cheap. If you want a nice, pretty airport, then fly Malaysia Airways. Besides, the LCCT is on par with Manila's Ninoy Aquino, and that airport is where you arrive if you fly anyone other than PAL, low-cost or not.

  • Yes. AirAsia system deliberately allocates seats all over the place to pax on the one booking. ANd Yes, the LLCT is an absolute SH*T HOLE.

"My family was intentionally placed randomly in the plane by their system"

Geez guys, how hard is it to pre book your seat allocation when doing ticket? takes all of a couple of clicks .

"Be prepared to line up for 60 minutes at immigration,"

I have taken far less than that at KL before
I have waited much longer than that at Coolangatta before
