I think I unknowingly bought a stolen iPhone 4S

I bought an iphone4s off a Facebook local buy and sell page. We communicated by messenger and I went to her house to pick it up. Gave her cash and went to Telstra to ask them to unlock it. The Telstra guy tried to do so but the phone is still linked to another Apple ID/ account. She said she herself bought the phone second hand from a friend, but I now suspect she lied and it is a stolen phone. I asked her if ahe can get her 'friend ' to login to find my phone and unlink her account but she is not replying to me. I sent her the link on how to do this.

I know I have lost my money but perhaps if the phone is stolen there might be a way I can return it to its rightful owner? Should I hand the phone into the police and explain the above. I've taken screenshots of the Facebook sale and have a record of my private messages to this 'woman'/'con artist '.

OP, if you think this guy really can do it, it might be worth your $30 to get an outcome without having to deal with the nasty woman any further.

If the phone is stolen or imei blocked, it won't cost you anything but I can guide you on filing a police report

        • good guy clickship.

Seriously though OP, report this to the police. She sold you what clearly is a stolen iphone, if you want your money back report it.

    • Still, it's prematurely drawn conclusion.

Hi, I have lost my iphone 4 from Hoppers Crossing in Victoria. My phone was stolen by a lady and I have reported to Werribee Police station few weeks back. I have blocked the IMEI number and cancel the SIM card. Please let me know if you have purchased from this area.

    • Mate, she purchased an iPhone 4S, not iPhone 4.

  • If she's threatened you in any way, any way whatsoever, call the police.

  • OP, how much did the item cost? I think you are letting the seller off very lightly.

    • Think she said $400…?

      • No she didn't. OP has not given a price.

        • Ahh true I remember where I got that from now - that was around the price on Ebay listings for used, so safe to assume she bought it for around that.

  • Take the phone into an apple store, they may be able to look up the owner details based on the IMEI. Since the IMEI is tied to the apple account, they should have access to all of this information. At the very least they might be able to contact the original owner so they can get in touch with you.

    • Thanks for your suggestion, yes apple would be the only ones (other than telstra) able to assist but neither are willing and blankly refuse telling me to contact the owner. How do they know that I'm not the theif iykwim?

What city do you live in Kimmy, out of interest? What suburb is she in?

Contact police sounds like the way to go, this woman sounds like an irrational pyscho.

Followed by a flaming bag of poop on her doorstep. ;)

Sorry to the new posters, I didn't get any notifications. I live in western Sydney. I sent a letter of demand to her via registered post. She has until today to contact me for issuing a refund. Is she doesn't, I'm going to file with small claims. I have contacted the local legal aid office.

      Best of luck!

    • Did you consider using the dude on the previous page of this thread who said he could fix the phone for $30?

I know it grinds your gears to have to fork out more money when you bought in good faith, but if it were me I'd spend that $30 and be happy about dodging further time wasting and angst dealing with the "come at me bro" woman.

EDIT: That is, if you think the $30 guy really can restore the phone. I make no claims on his behalf, don't know him from a can of beans. You need to judge his credibility for yourself.

      • Think he said he got confused and couldn't do it, actually.

Nah, I meant the second guy, clickship. Down the bottom of page 1. The guy you're talking about I think is eXtremist, he conceded he couldn't do it. Clickship claimed he's got training and certification that allows him to do it and would only charge the $30 if successful. Sounds like a worthwhile avenue to try.

        • Thanks, I only saw that post after you mentioned it. I've messaged him but he hasn't responded.
