That's a good question. I own a version I purchased on Steam during a sale last year for about $10.
With Arma engine games the protection seems to be almost completely tied to the serial number, so a non-Steam version should be fine, or possibly better (less DRM). You could try contacting GG but the deal expires around 10 PM Saturday. When people try pirating these games all sorts of things go awry because there are various serial checks during gameplay, which the pirated versions fail. Enemies always hit you from 500 metres away, you cannot hit a target 20 metres away, you get polymorphed into a seagull upon access an ammo dump, etc. It is always amusing when people criticize games for such bugs. That said, Arma 2 and Iron Front are both not free of bugs for legitimate owners. The free roaming campaigns in Arma 2 often didn't work properly, for instance :(
