Apple Warranty Support outside Australia - Your experience and expectations ?

I had an interesting online chat with Apple this afternoon regarding someone purchasing an iPad in Australia and gifting it to a New Zealand resident - the answer was that the iPad would need to be sent back to Australia for warranty repair.

This got me thinking what the situation would be if someone took their Australian purchased Apple product on an overseas holiday and had the misfortune to require warranty repair whilst there. The initial response was that international laws prevent Apple offering warranty outside the country of purchase - pushed a bit more and a supervisor offered that local Apple stores would do what they could but due to model differences may not be able to offer repair service.

So given a lot of people do take their devices when they travel I thought I'd post here to let people know what they might expect and also to see if anyone has experienced good or bad service in this situation.

Cheers

IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.
Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.

I'd hope they would repair/replace it but I wouldn't be angry if they didn't

Apple are scum. They have refused many many people on international model products because they price gouge countries in different ways.

I tried with an iPhone 3G in london. DENIED.

they know where the shit comes from too due to their nazi stance on tracking every serial number / IMEI number.

Godwin's law in the first post. That's impressive.

  • I bought an iPhone 5 in China, the A1429 model, which is superior to the ones sold here in terms of LTE bands.

Unfortunately after about 9 months it developed a fault. Took it to an Apple Store and they swapped it for an Australian version. I would have preferred my A1429 model as I sometimes travel to China, but I took it anyway.

While I can't offer a definitive answer to the op post only just an opinion. I'd have thought given the Apple/i device(s) crazy inflated pricing structure, Apple would/should service any genuine in warranty device wherever you are as more than the cost of long term servicing has been incorporated into the purchase price?

Then there are those who when finding it necessary to defend Apple products insist the superior build quality and premium quality parts should prevent it from EVER needing servicing or warranty repair?

So the question of warranty repair then would be academic only?

    • Well put - your comments take the discussion further into the realm of quality etc - my experience there is limited but not positive.
Whilst travelling in the US my iPad 1 developed a problem where the screen, whilst sort of readable was largely a fuzzy green - took it to the San Francisco Apple store to discover it was 32 days out of warranty so too bad so sad - same deal in Australia - thankfully my credit card extended warranty saved the day.
Even the best products have a percentage failure rate - it's what happens next that counts.
PS - In fairness I have had other Apple products with no problems

From my inquiries, Apple regards Australia and New Zealand as one market. So, warranties on iPhones and iPads with cellular access purchased in either country are valid in both countries.

You should not rely on information given by the Apple staff who take calls on the Apple 1300-321-456 support number. You need to ask for a senior supervisor, or for the staff to check with a senior supervisor.

  • How about if you have AppleCare for a macbook. Does that include international warranty?

    Yes.

It is the cellular items (iPhone, iPad) that have warranties that are market specific.
