Nitro Endurance Mountain Bike $179 (RRP 299) @ Rebel

50

This bike seems ok.
Smooth shifting 21-speed Shimano gears
Front suspension forks
New alloy frame design

Anyone can confirm the size of this bike?

"Bike junkies" (who always suggest people to spend thousands of dollars on a bicycle) do NOT comment please.

  • What sort of alloy, I wonder. Steel is an alloy.

    • What sort of alloy

      I think it's Osmium…

Kind of rude to call people "Bike Junkies"

But this bike has all the same kind of stuff the big w bikes have
    plastic cranks, plastic derailleurs.

You'd be stupid to pay 299 for this and I definately wouln't pay $179

Doesn't seem like that bad a BSO. Looks like a Tourney RD and FD, probably a click shifter. Probably what you would expect in this, 180, price range. Although at this range I would pick

      http://www.reidcycles.com.au/reid-mtb-sport.html

      or

      http://www.reidcycles.com.au/bicycles/mountain-bikes/x126-ri…

      over this Nitro.

Edit: Actually the urban version of the x126 seems like a pretty good casual on the road bike. Slick tires, rigid forks, half decent group set for 200 odd.

      • the x126 urban would be my pick too - it's perfect for cyclepath/pavement/road riding - you try to do any "mountain biking" on a sub-$400 bike and you'll find out why people spend vast sums of money.

      I don't think it's rude.
I can't see any logic in not wanting some expert opinions though!!!
Maybe OP should ask the staff at Rebel Sport, I'm sure they'll tell him/her how great they are.

I'm sure those looking at bikes will welcome the "Bike junkies" opinions, on this particular bike.

Don't be impressed by it having Shimano gears. There is a large number of "levels" of quality in Shimano components.
They make cheap sh!t gears for the just-lasts-for-1-year market as well as fantastic ones for those willing to pay $500 for a decent starter bike..

From the blurry photos, I am guessing its a Tourney. Which is definitely quite capable while not being fantastic. At this price range, you often see either "nameless" Shimanos or Sunrace or worse brands. So if its indeed a Tourney, then it will be decent. However, the quality of the groupset is irrelevant if its not put together right, and these BSOs usually ain't put together right.

Personally, a cheap Reid or a cheap Cell would be way better, even if they have the same (or worse) specs. As they will be properly sized to the rider (The Reid examples I had above have 3 sizes, BSO usually comes in the one), and properly assembled, and the 1 year service would be very useful for a newbie.

Also worth considering what you want to do on the bike, if your going off road/cycle path then go for a mountain bike, if your staying on road/cycle path then I would recommend looking at a hybrid or road bike. IMHO you'll end up enjoying cycling more if you choose the right bike type for your activity.

As people have already posted cell bikes or Reid cycles are a good place to start if your after a good shop brand bike. Also worth checking out gumtree as people quite often buy a good bike don't ride it and sell it off cheap as it's just taking up space.

    "Bike junkies"

As opposed to people who re-buy a succession of BSOs every 18 months?

  • Doesnt look too different to my cheapass Kmart bike :p

  • Is Smooth shifting as in "Smooth shifting 21-speed Shimano gears" a characteristic of the product or just its name?

  • I just bought the Nitro Endurance at Rebel for $179. It is much better quality than others around same price at Big W etc. it is very similar to the Reid MTB sport at $199. Same Shimano tourney derailers except has thumb switchers which I prefer. The bike is very light compared to similar priced mountain bikes. I would have liked wider tyres, the ones on the bike are 1,95 width. Because I would have paid $49 shipping from Reid Cycles I decided to go with this bike and I believe it was worth the price.
