  • I bought a used one (gen 1) from EB, but still haven't received it. Is it worth just buying this? It will cost nearly $200 more.

It's worth it if you can afford it; the specs of the Retina iPad mini blow the first generation mini out of the water. The specs of the first iPad mini are basically the same as the iPad 2, which is nearly 3 years old at this point. I'd be particularly concerned that the low 512MB RAM of the old mini might be pretty unwieldy in another year or so.

If budget is an issue, I'd probably recommend a Nexus 7 (2013) over an old iPad mini unless you're wedded to iOS. (Not to start a holy war — I happily use both iOS and Android.)

      • Budget isn't an issue, just need something simple for web browsing. Mini 1 seems more than enough, but if I buy mini 2 and sell it later on it only depreciates $50 a year (ebay).

        • If you can, try both in a store. Mini 1 performs OK - good app selection and zippy enough but the screen is TERRIBLE. Night and day difference between mini 1 and mini 2. Mini 1 > nexus 7 > Mini 2

        • The mini 1 pixel density was never good enough for me. Plenty probably would disagree though. Also for widescreen media you end up with blackbars, so you end up carrying a bigger device but get similar size screen.

I also have both iOS and Android tablets. Atm, Bing Lee's selling the Nexus 7 for $279 + shipping and you can get Officeworks to price match and pay 5% less. Imo, if you want a tablet for browsing, email, reading and watching media, you can't go pass the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" for $229 at Dick Smith. It's good value for a 1920x1200 tablet.

I've found since owning an iPad air, you are better getting a widescreen tablet for watching most media. :)

This has been the price since release.

  • Big W price $468 less $23.40 from prebuying Big W giftcards at 5% discount using ING paywave card =$444.60

    • But isn't ING card 5% cash-back applies to $100 and below

hmm that's why he said by buying giftcards. Buy 5 separate giftcards at <$100 and still receive the 5% rebate. Though they finally caught up to me splitting payments to get the rebate. :D :(

        • Get family members to buy some of them for you so not all go through on same ING account.

        • Sorry to hear you got hassled Ronnie. What did they say to you?

        • I done it atleast a dozen plus times, because I'd even split up amounts just over $100. :D

They just put a block on your account and told me that the card is not intended to be used that way. lol Then they get you to promise not to use it like that if you want the account unblocked. Time to close and reopen as a new customer I think. :P

    • Pre-buy coles group gift cards will be 5% off $459.

      • this target deal available by click & collect only - online payment with credit card or paypal. no option to pay by giftcard at checkout. hence my suggestion buying in-store at big w.

  • I'd been hunting down an ipad mini retina from Target through all of December (when my staff discount card was 10%) and was never able to get one in stock. Visited multiple stores multiple times. I gave up.

I don't expect a real sale any time soon, until the mini 3 comes out, so I might settle for something else instead. Thinking a Kindle Fire HDX.

    • What is the diffenrece between Kindle Fire HD and HDX ? And how does the HD compares to Nexus 7 in your opinion.

      • HDX is the 2nd gen of HD.

HDX hardware is Snapdragon 800, which kills Nexus 7's processor.

Also, it's available in 16, 32, and 64 GB, and they are not expensive. Something like $40 per upgrade. You can buy a 64GB for cheaper than Google would charge for a 64GB Nexus if they had one.

The 8.9" is 2560x1600, with 339 ppi (the highest of any tablet).

  • Seems out of stock everywhere

    • there is stock in Target Country in Warragul
