Bird deterrents??

Hi guys

I'm going nuts here of how to handle this bird problem I've got.
A little bit of background I live on the top floor of an apartment and we used to get birds perched and crapping on the edge of the roof (so they hung out and crapped on my balcony) also dropped rocks, I managed to talk to strata and owner corp and thankfully they installed those bird spikes which helped.

But now a handful of them now have migrated to sitting on my balcony ledge so they crap on the ledge and the railing. And I can't seem to get rid of them!!

I googled around and I bought those shiny streamers and attached them to my balcony to flutter about and it worked… for 2 days and the cockatoos and crows came back more entertained then scared.
I bought those owl/hawk looking statues and didn't work they were again amused and sat on top of it!
Gosh I wish BB guns weren't banned so I could have a little fun and shoot them away.

Only thing left is if I'm at home I have to run out like a mad man and throw water at them.
I really don't want to go down the road to installing bird spikes on the ledge and railing due to cost and eyesore.

  • Water pistols ;)

hang old cd disks up as the light reflects on them when they are spinning around

    • or goon bags (Casked Wine)

Although I've seen both methods fail pretty bad.

Maybe try bird wire. Very discrete. Basically trips them up when they try to land.

    Fake/rubber snakes.

      Real snakes.

DING DING DING! That's is the answer!

    • Fake/rubber snakes.

Make sure you move it around regularly though. If you don't the birds will soon ignore it also.

    smash eggs in the balcony…
they would know not to mess with you…

      Yes smash those birds ovaries.

  • Try opening a big umbrella fast on the balcony. They think it's the wing span of a bird of prey.

Or just get a bird of prey.

  • lucky you do not have ibis;
paid to trim our palm tree and they just came back.
    they are protected birds.
    be careful.

  • Buy a nerf gun?
    Insert pin into tip
    Dip said tip in LSD

Shoot bird and watch them trip out

Actually, don't use LSD, they might get addicted and come back with friends

LSD isn't addictive… But you still don' t want a flock of birds freaking out on your balcony. Hot chips with asprin inserted should do the trick.

  • Install a scarecrow?

  • What about a bird repelling device?

It's really just a motion sensing device that makes noises and flashes lights. Although there is a risk of it making too much noise and waking you up in the middle of the night.

  • We've tried all of the below on our balcony deck to stop the birds:

    • Rubber snakes (fail)
    • Plastic Hawk (Currawong eventually attacked it and unsurprisingly won)
    • Plastic Owl (fail)
    • CDs on string (fail)

Best thin that worked is plastic bags on the ends of brooms or hanging up. Looks awful but the combination of both movement and sound has worked the best.

We do have some bird spikes but I never used them as I like to lean on the deck with a beer at the end of a day.

  • This or something similar:

Google: motion sensing water gun, or etc…

    Cheers!

  • BB guns arnt illegal here, you just need a license. Although going getting the license and meeting the requirements is excessive unless your going to do it anyways.

Then you have the problem of shooting straight through and blowing out someones window.

Then, there is the noise, while not that loud it does seem to echo and the spray of feathers when you shoot one.

It is far easier to just build a slingshot but you still have the problem of breaking windows etc. But the good thing is you have an option for softer projectiles (small rubber balls/pellets, fish pellets)

I grew up with a red neck as a best friend, one thing we noticed is that birds are local and once you start shooting them, they stay away for a while, then come back with extreme caution. So you would probably have to do it every few months.
