Microsoft Surface keyboard question

So having said yesterday that the Surface was probably not really of much use to us, hubby decided this morning that we had to have one. Local store didn't have any, so we ended up driving 1.5 hours each way to collect.

The sales assistant told us that the version 2 covers with backlighting are not compatible with the surface that was on sale.

Some reading I have done since returning home would suggest that that is possibly not correct? Can anyone shed some light on this please?

I have just brought the surface RT at HM for $223 and got the surface 2 backlit cover 2 with it and it works perfectly fine. Hope that helps

I have a Surface Pro 1 and the Type Cover 2 (backlit). They work perfectly together.

  The Tech Specs at the Microsoft store website (http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/productI…) confirm that the Type Cover 2 is suitable for all flavours of Surface -
  
  Supported platforms: Surface, Surface 2, Surface Pro, and Surface Pro 2
