I had a Chinese Note 2 clone for 6 months this year and it was great. Cost under $200 from fastcardtech.com and it had good signals and a reasonably responsive screen and UI.
I only got rid of it because my nephew crashed his phone and made me an offer I could not refuse.
The downside is that it may be hard to get a case for it locally so best to order one at the same time when you buy the phone.
