Do Banks give out Personal Details?

A bit of a random question, but I was wondering if given a BSB and Account Number, is there any chance that a bank can give more personal information such as address and contact of the holder…etc.

I am wanting to use my bank account for a small personal business I'm starting as a sole trader, as I don't see any point in getting a business account…etc. at this stage before the business is even up and running, but I'm concerned that people might be able to find out more personal information from the BSB and Account Number.

They will be able to see your account name if they send a payment through online banking. Don't think the bank would give out your address or phone number.

    no chance. privacy issues.

  • Okay thanks guys, of course I don't mind name, but if I'm operating with business transactions…etc. I would want to be wary with anyone who might want to find out my address and personal phone number for the wrong reasons.

So I guess that I am safe in this regard?

  • Yes, the Banks do give out Personal Details.

    From CBA Privacy Policy CBA

"We co-operate with police and other
    enforcement bodies as required or
    allowed by law.

    We disclose relevant personal information
to external organisations that help us provide
services. These organisations are bound by
    confidentiality arrangements. They may
    include overseas organisations. "

So out sourced stuff like on-line statements get handled by Salmat.
Taxation and Police can find out stuff.

Also the info "Personal information may be used and
disclosed within the Group to administer
    our products and services"

So pretty much anyone within the bank could have access.

    no chance. privacy issues.

Whilst there maybe plenty of rules, the actual protection is little better than the "Cone Of Silence".

    • I know banks give out personal details to the police, but that wasn't what I was trying to ask.

In order to receive money, I need to give my BSB and Account Number to other parties, I was wondering whether those parties would be able to find out more information about me, e.g. address (I don't mind phone number so much, but address is an issue) by contacting the bank with that information.

But anyway, I'd be interested in finding out more about this.

      • Generally all they will tell you is if the account is valid. Otherwise, they only divulge info to the account holder after being identified.

  • Why not just get a business account with Bank West?
    It is free anyway

  • I don't know about others but unless I have a physical address on a business I do not deal with them. Most reputable businesses do not have anything to hide.

    Don't be so naive!
    Of course they do. (Pssst)
Staff can see your details. And are they above reproach?
How else do they make $6 Billion profit per year!
I only tell them what I allow the world to know.
    Birthdates etc are bogus.

No comment on your suspicions, but you seem to have a non sequitur in your reasoning. How is the integrity (or lack of) of the staff connected with the declared profits of the bank? Money that you allege go into the pockets of corrupt staff won't show up in profit and loss statements.

    • Are you sure you're not breaking any laws by opening bank accounts with bogus birthdates?

  • A member of the public won't be able to find your address details just from a BSB and account number. That said though, once you register an ABN, they will be able to do a search on that through various services and find the registered office address (which may well be your home). It does cost to do these searches but they are relatively easy to access.

  • Its possible to know the senders name and bank account detail in rabodirect online.
    I was surprised.

  • Sorry, the staff do not make the profits, the big banks do. Should have put a comma there.
The moral, do not volunteer personal info, only what is absoluitely needed.
And after you sign up with an account approving them to use your details as they see fit, inform them you do not want your details revealed. I do that, no probs.
    It can be done!
