Australia Post Price Rise - 70c per stamp

Australia Post are in talks to raise the price of a standard stamp to 70c. This is after the sneaky international price rise of $1.00 that was posted here on OzBargain to England.

When this goes through, as it will 100% go through, it will mean postage for items will be increased especially for smaller items that require single stamps as postage. The average is about 2-3 stamps per parcel. That's an extra 20c - 30c per item.

The thing I really don't like about how Australia Post is trying to make it seem like it should be accepted by Australians because of the loss of business due to e-mail, they failed to say they recently acquired Startrack Express due to the high volumes of parcels, and profits from those parcels with 70%+ from Online Sales. The are currently seeing an influx of 10% per year of the amount of parcels going through the Postal System.

However, the company says it has not made a formal request for an increase in the stamp price.

This is usually what happens when they create noise for feedback, without making it seem formal. Once it all dies down, the request will go through and a price rise will be inevitable.

That's right. It is not about inflation. It is about the big decline in people / companies posting letters. AusPost know letter delivery business is declining every year. The issue is the revenue (income) coming from letter delivery business is decreasing. The revenue has been lower than the expenses for years now, so a postage increase is needed.

We're also all going to be earning more (on average) as wages rise.

Are the people complaining going to take that wage rise when it eventually comes? Remember that AP employs people, and their wages rise too.

If AP don't raise their prices they will go out of business. Simple economics.

  • Stock up on Christmas stamps and use them!

    • the 55c ones are card only. If you use it for anything else(thicker than the size of a card), the person that the item is addressed to gets a letter in the mail saying not enough postage was on the item, and an additional $2.00 fee is added.

Guess Australia`s dealt with things better than Canada

    • Its because our home delivery is covered under federal law that everyone in australia regardless of location has the ability to post a letter at the same cost.

As for reducing daily deliveries, they are already starting to do that now in many rural areas, moving it to every 2nd day (Mon/Wed/Fri) in an effort to cut costs. And as the years roll by it will happen in more and more areas.

Personally I think that's a good idea. In addition to that there's a post box close to my house that gets emptied everyday that, in all likelihood, doesn't need to be. If they emptied it Mon/Wed/Fri there's an "upto" 40% reduction in something (*labour, money etc…). The extra day or two delay doesn't really matter. If you've got time sensitive stuff to send, pay more and use express.

Having said that, I'd hate for standard mail delivery to become unreliable and take too long.

In Ozbargain spirit does anyone know (officially) how long we can still use 60c stamps for, I asked my owner operated Post Office and he suggested "a couple of weeks" - anyone know if there is an official cut off for 60c stamped mail ?

  • I asked to buy just a 60c stamp and was sold a giant stamp. Giant as in 4x5cm. It has "2013" printed on it, so would it be safe to use by itself without 10c stamps? Or is it secretly a 70c-era stamp to stamp out the OzBargainers trying to buy 60c stamps (pun intended)?

  • Might just be another April fools day thing?

  • I read somewhere that certain people can still get 60 cent stamps. Does anyone know the exact conditions on it and what you have to do to prove it.

    • Pensioners can receive stamps for 70c.

You need to show your pension card when purchasing.

      • 70c???

          60c. My apologies.

  • Paying an extra 10c is not cheap if you do mailing regularly… I know it is apart of inflation but for people with lower income etc makes it a issue, also talk about the other increases like $7 GP for people on pension are going to struggle.

  • they might as well just raise it $1 and no-one can do a God-Damn thing about it! because they know there's no other way around it. It's the big Monopoly that controls Australia's postal system. same with Petrol - if you don't pay for it, you have to find other alternative transport and who here doesn't use a car to get around?

10c stamp cost rise, longer delivery time than overseas mail, reduced delivery days to 3-4 a week, but what annoys me is the postie leaving collect cards even when I'm home!! Too lazy to get to my door and I have to spend money on petrol to collect small parcel. What next?
