AirAsia stopping over Kuala Lumpur

My AirAsia flight to Hong Kong will stop over at Kuala Lumpur Low Cost Carrier Terminal and as it is not a fly-through I have to clear the custom and I have to checkin my baggage again for the leg to Hong Kong Airport. Coming into Australia I have to declare any food items and certain food are not allowed to be brought in. I wonder if Malaysia has the same kind of custom restriction as in Australia?

Also I have at least 5 hours to spare during the stopover. Is there any place worth going during this period of time?

If anyone can share his/her experience, I will be much appreciated.

5 hours is not enough margin to go into KL.

I agree that 5 hours probably isn't worth the time to go into KL and back - the trip from the airport to the city is 1.5 hours each way at minimum (even longer if there is a traffic jam - and there often is!). Perhaps take a shuttle over to KLIA to spend the time instead. KLIA is bigger, has more shops and restaurants and is a damn sight better-looking than the LCCT.

On to your first question: Malaysia is very, very lax customs-wise. I go every year and I have never had any issues at all bringing any food items in.

You could hire a taxi to take you to see the architecture in Putrajaya and spend an hour doing that. Putrajaya is half an hour away from LCCT.

Or check-in to the budget Tune Hotel 5 mins' walk away for a shower and a few hours' lie in.

If it is the Old LCCT (Air Asia is using it until about May 2014) then it is a shite hole to catch taxis from. You may queue up for an hour just for that. I would recommend staying at the LCCT. Otherwise you may be stressed out about getting back in time. I would accept the fact that you will be wasting 5+ hours of your life that you will never get back, at the LCCT. Have a walk around there (nothing to see though) and maybe get yourself into the Plaza Premium Lounge (Land side, not air side) and have a shower, a beer (usually not cold) and a meal (always very basic meal). Also available are 3 computers (1 of which is often unserviceable) and wifi that is not very good! Last time that I was flying out of LCCT AirAsia had 'All Flights' check-in counters open, and so I was able to check my baggage in about 4 hours before the flight to Sydney.

Air Asia is using it until about May 2014

Interesting, first time I read about this, but on searching it seems that this is the fifth estimated completion date for KLIA2 so knowing how things (don't) work in Malaysia, I wouldn't count on that deadline. There is a KLIA2 website and looks like they gave up updating after the last deadline of June 2013 was missed, though the news page has links to announcements of more delays.

      • It's a white elephant often mocked as a joke in the papers. There are no photos released of its progress and people gave up believing any of the ETA's.

  • I'd stay in the hot tin shed at LCCT, you can't get into the city and back in that time and do anything good.

the terminal is terrible, but they have starbucks with wifi etc

when I went they were making any Indian people go through xrays etc and any white person was waved straight through.

  • Based on my memory from passing through a few years ago, there is another food court type building a short (2mins?) walk from the main terminal building. Less crowded/more seats available, more F&B options available, easier to access power points/charge your devices, pretty sure it still has wifi connectivity from there. Only found out about this after my outbound flight, so made sure to use it on the return leg and it was a world of difference when passing a few hours of transit time.
