Cheap winter clothes for Germany/France in beginning of Feb 2014

Hi guys,

Really could use some help here.

Going on a whirlwind 9 day trip to Frankfurt, Munich and Paris in start Feb 2014, being from Perth is that period really cold and worse than Australian winters? If so, wehre can I get cheap clothes that'll keep me warm enough? Going to be taking trains and public transport everywhere.

Comments

  • Yes, it's colder there in winter. Snows even. Even if you are taking public transport, you will have to dress warmly.

  • Are you asking about buying clothes here or buying it then you are over there?

    • Preferably here as then I don't freeze to death when I land…..Another thing though, I am spending a few days in Singapore so don't know if buying there is better?

I don't even know what I need given I'm onlt spending 6-7 days in Germany and 3 days in France, before going to Kuala Lumpur.

  • Havn't been myself, but google says temps in Berlin in Feb were from lows of -6 deg to top of 11 deg (http://www.accuweather.com/en/de/berlin/10178/february-weath…) so def will need something warm. Layers are your friend! T-shirt, long sleeve shirt, jumper and jacket. Could look at a thermal top and leggings as well (Kathmandu, Mountain Designs, etc) and possibly a down jacket if you really feel the cold.

I was just in Singapore, and while it's difficult to imagine why they need them, I saw a few places selling winter clothes and jackets. One that comes to mind was an 'Ultralight down jacket' at Uniglo for S$99 (although on the website it's showing as S$69 - http://www.uniqlo.com/sg/product/men/tops/down) It did seem very thin - a lot thinner than say Kathmandu jackets i've seen, but should be pretty warm, and packs really small (although down jackets generally do) They also had some lined pants/jeans for like $30. Don't recall other shop brands/prices to compare.

  • I would suggest getting something from outdoor shops. like a down jacket. The trick is to wear layers so that you can peel them off as you get indoors.

I am not familiar with WA so I cannot suggest.any place.
I like merino wool clothes and wool coats.

I like to buy from this NZ place http://www.bivouac.co.nz/

  • Try mountain designs. Love the icebreaker thermals for layering and think Columbia is on sale too. Wear thermals tops and bottoms. Get a beanie and scarf and good socks . Heat escapes from your head if it is uncovered, make sure your coat is water resistant and good water resistant walking shoes with good grip . Watch out for ice on the streets. Also, some thinsulate gloves. My feet never felt warm the whole winter we wherein the UK.

Mountain designs is clearing off Columbia at 50 - 70% off

  • Saw great womens coat in Germany for 70 euro. We were comfortable in low temps wearing thermals, ling sleeve tshirt, light weight v neck and soft shell jacket from Aldi. Buy a great coat cheap over there.
