I'm thinking of getting an Asus STX for it. Would that do?
STX is not enough. you need to buy a headphone amplifier, for example, Violectric HPA V100 Headphone Amplifier.
I have an STX and the headphone amplifier on it is not enough.
What would you recommend, then? I'll be using it mostly for gaming, but music and movies will be on the cards as well.
These are fairly neutral, meaning the bass isn't going to be that heavy. Perfect for classical music. If you're going to be spending most of your time playing games, you'd probably be better off getting some bass heavy headphones (beyerdynamic have some decent ones). These are also open ended, meaning everyone else can hear what you're playing. Great for sound stage, but not for privacy.

This x 1000. You don't need big booming bass for videogames - knowing where your enemy is coming from is far more immersive. Hearing the zombie coming from your left in DayZ, the screaming knight flanking you in Chivalry or the deadly pony sneaking in for the kill in Horsez.
So tempted by these, but already pretty happy with my AD700s. Are these a huge upgrade?
Depends, but I don't think so. Plus, why would you want to spend money on another open ear headphone when you already have a decent one?
I own an AD700 and love it but I am thinking of budgeting either $300 for a closed-back or around 100$ for the Sony MDR7506/AT M50

i'm actually running these headphones with an asus xonar stx and it works fine (for my purposes anyway). The STX has a headphone amp in it. The volume for me is around 15/100 - if I push it to 20 it's too loud for me. But that's just me!
O2 Amplifier. Can DIY or buy pre-assembled and made to be a no-audiophile-nonsense amplifier for around $130 pre-built.
Optional Dac for a bit more too.

C'mon buddy. Technically 'an' example, but not a wise one. Dismissing all other arguments about amplifiers, these are $250 headphones. Why on earth would you suggest an $800 amplifier. Spending $1050 for $250 headphones to be the best $250 headphones they can be is questionable when it's attainable for much less.

Just an update for anyone still reading. I received mine and they say made in Austria.
Maybe add "headphones" to the title of the deal, so people know what AKG Q701's are (can't tell when using a feed reader to scan deals).

Mine are set to arrive on Monday (ordered on Thursday morning. Express shipping of course. I needed them in a hurry as I managed to break my old headphones last week.
Decent price brand new. A relatively powerful dedicated headphone amplifier of some sort is a must as these are a demanding headphone, a Fiio amp probably won't do for example.
