Amazon.co.uk DVD Stock Clearance (Region 2)

170

ozpanda recently posted The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The West Wing boxed set, which are but two examples from Amazon UK's DVD Stock Clearance. There is a wide range of movies and series on sale, many over 50-70% off, which means plenty of bargains even after factoring exchange rate and international shipping costs.

Note:

  1. Most DVDs sold by Amazon UK will be Region 2 encoded, posing problems for locked Australian (Region 4) players. Hopefully everyone has universal or unlocked DVD players, however buyer beware.
  2. Airmail delivery rates start from £3.58 for a single item. (2-4 day Priority Express delivery also available, starting from £21.48 …)
  3. Depending on your credit card, it is probably better not to use the Amazon Currency Converter (proceed with the £ price instead). At current exchange rates, expect to pay in Australian dollars a little more than twice the number of pounds.

Some examples:

  • Beowulf - Limited Edition 2 Disc Steelbook Director's Cut — £3.96. (83% off)
  • Robocop Trilogy — £5.96. (82% off)
  • Life On Mars : Complete BBC Series 1 — £8.68. (78% off)
  • Blade Runner: The Final Cut 2-Disc Special Edition — £3.98. (77% off)
  • Kill Bill 1 and 2 Box Set — £7.98. (77% off)
  • Smallville - The Complete Seventh Season — £11.98. (76% off)
  • Iron Man — £4.98. (75% off)
  • No Country For Old Men — £4.98. (75% off)
  • The Dark Knight 2 Discs — £5.98. (74% off)
  • Band Of Brothers - Complete HBO Series commemorative gift set — £17.97. (70% off)
  • Planet Earth : Complete BBC Series 5 Disc Box Set — £12.98. (68% off)
  • Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - Season 1 — £10.18. (66% off)
  • Battlestar Galactica - Series 1-4 — £32.98. (63% off)

    Very good tip. Thanks!

    • No problem. That applies to most sites that offer currency conversion - usually at a very uncompetitive rate.

Amazon.co.uk's rate was approximately 0.475 dollars to the pound when I ordered today.

      • Delivered today, 5 days after ordering (standard airmail).

        • Nice. I am till waiting for my LoTR trilogy…

  • Are there any clues as to when this sale will end?

    • I remember reading that the clearance sale ends on 31st May when i was going through the selections.

      Huge Stock Clearance
Offer ends at 23:59 on 31 May 2009. Subject to availability

Click on the "Low Prices in our Huge Stock Clearance" at the top right of the home page

      • I believe that is correct as it is also referred to as a spring (northern hemisphere) clearance.

  • Just be careful: there're many HD-DVDs in there (different from DVDs) and most people aren't looking to order in that superceded format.

    • I don't recall seeing any HD-DVDs myself, but there is a lot of Blu-ray stuff (though not as heavily discounted). I'm no fan of Amazon's web design but the vast majority of items are clearly categorised and labelled (with [DVD] appearing after the title).

      • I looked through the "specials" list the other day when I rec'd the e-mail also, and their ARE a great many HD-DVD titles listed as pointed out by SpodDude, so be careful when ordering.
And yes, very good tip to point out about the "convenient inbuilt currency converter". I compared the rate myself when ordering a few weeks ago found it to be unfavourable to say the least.

  • A big thanks to the OP.

I bought well over 15 dvds (including a massive Laurel and Hardy DVD box Set for my dad which was 83% off) and shipping was like 23 GBP.

    Good bargains!

  • Just bought the complete box set of Monk (season 1-6) for ~30 GBP including shipping. A good point is that orders to outside of UK don't include VAT (value added tax) and therefore are 9% cheaper than the prices shown (in my case, just enough to cover the shipping)

  • Isn't VAT supposed to be 17.5%? However I noticed that some titles (usually cheaper ones) do not remove VAT and Amazon's explanation was that those are shipped from USA directly to their customers in UK in which case the law says that they do not have to charge VAT, so it cannot be removed if we order from outside UK as it was not added in the first place, then this company in USA only ships to UK so for overseas customers they re-ship it and do not have to add VAT…

Also from what I remember when ordering a few weeks back, Amazon converter wanted to charge 2.5% and my cc company charges 2%

    • well, just re-calculated. The VAT is 15%.

  • Also, I just remembered noticing, several Region 1 ( & NTSC?) DVDs were also listed, so be extra careful when ordering.

A large number of Amazon's products ship from overseas so that UK customers do not have to pay VAT. Most items come from the Channel Islands. UK customs only allow items up to (from memory) 18 GBP in without paying VAT. Because of this anything on Amazon over this price would ship from the UK and include VAT. This means you can take about 13% off the list price. Anything under the value depends on where Amazon have the stock. Some items you can reduce the price, some you can't.

      Thanks for the explanation.

  • I found a DVD pack that was interesting, signed up and filled out credit card details (which you have to go through just to find postage) and tried to buy just for it to tell me that the item wouldn't be sent here. (What's up with that? It doesn't explain why in the rules). I thought Amazon was meant to be quick and easy! :-(

Cheers for the post; I think the dvds I found and bought weren't actually part of that deal but for 20 pounds each off, can't complain. Only issue is the reasonably expensive postage - worked out at about 9 pounds in total for 4 normal-sized dvd sets. Still, for things not available here, well worth it regardless.

  • yay i received my Lord of Rings. Looks good.

  • Just received BSD Seasons 1-4. Even Region 4
