Fake Greenlip Abalone?

Purchased a pack of 4 (in a frozen bag) from a store in Chinatown Sydney. used for soup making. 1 turned out to be yellowish in colour, another grey - the yellowish one tastes so much stronger/better than the greyish one. The shop owner said nothing wrong with the grey one - it is only an older one. he gladly exchanged the remainder one in the bag. now the question, is he right about it? anyone knows abalone?

  • over in Melbourne, we have a restaurant that serve vegetarian abalone. Has a similar chewy feel in the mouth without the abalone flavor.

  • as seen in the pics, the colours r totally different. texture wise similar but the yellowish one tastes so much stronger/richer in flavour than the greyish. the greyish one still taste OK, but only just.

    • You could be lucky in that the yellow/golden one is considered as the premium abalone. The cantonese saying is 'tong sum' abalone meaning "Sugar Heart" and commands a higher price than the regular abalone.
