  • i think the defacto AC router here is the Dlink Dir865L

right now its $169 - $100 cashback… its the best $69 router you'll get for the foreseeable future

had high hopes for the Tplink C7 Archer but they screwed that up

i personally would not pay top dollar for an AC router when the state of laptop cards for it isnt that good

  • Although the DIR865L is great, isn't it a router only???

Because you asked for a modem router I would have to say the AVM Fritz!Box 7490

    http://www.avm.de/en/news/artikel/2013/cebit_7490.html

IF YOU CAN WAIT. The 7390 was by far the best modem/router available (not just according to me - all the magazines I read also place it on their #1 choice). The 7490 is the refresh, however, the firmware has not been adapted to International yet. I have been told by the Australian distributor it's not far away though.

I cannot recommend these things enough with 5 year warranty for starters, and I consistently get 2Mbps or MORE out of their ADSL/ADSL2+ connections than I do with any other modem I try. They are ADSL2+/VDSL and Ethernet capable so can handle current, Labor, AND Liberal ideas of NBN and their wireless is top notch with the units constantly monitoring interference and hopping to clear(er) channels if required. Most stable wireless I've worked with at great speeds.

That is just the tip of the iceberg as to what it does as it has built in ATA ports, answering machine and fax capabilities, Media Server capabilities with connected hard drives or USB sticks, full LAN control if you want to block certain parts of the net to certain computers even at certain times, you can tell the wireless to shut off at night. It even has DECT wireless built in so you can connect either Fritz! or other DECT phones to it.

Just have a Google for all the things it can do.

Is it cheap? Hell no. The 7390 goes for between $250-$300, so I expect the 7490 to hit the market at a higher price even than that, but you asked for the BEST? Mate with all the features it has for the price, myself and the magazines (and most tech review sites) think it certainly fits that moniker.

  • +1

The AVM Fritz!Box 7490 seems to be missing integrated VOIP. Or am I missing something?
For 7490 features list check, see: http://www.voipon.co.uk/avm-fritzbox-7490-p-4998.html
Alternatively, with integrated VOIP as well, this Billion looks pretty useful and less expensive:

    • From the site you found:

"Telephone system for ISDN, IP and analog including answering machine and fax function - See more at: http://www.voipon.co.uk/avm-fritzbox-7490-p-4998.html#sthash…

The IP above means it has VoIP capabilities. I have the 7390 and according to AVM Australia the 7490 is just an upgraded version of that.

I've just added a SIPTalk pay-as-you go account to my Fritz!Box, and it works flawlessly. You can either choose to use VoIP by default OR dial a code before the number to dial via VoIP.

BUT I admit, before the AVM was available here in Australia I used to use and recommend Draytek or Billion. You cannot go wrong with them either so your recommendation is valid for cheaper price.

But really if you want the kitchen sink and reliable as hell (I've ONLY EVER returned two for customer that were stuck by lightening and they were replace no questions asked) I'd consider going AVM. I have never had to even reset a single device. ADSL and wireless just keep working. Something the D-Links and Netcomms seems to need often is a reset.

  • Just to clarify you want a dual band 5ghz router. If so just keep in mind your devices will need to support it.

    • yes i understand i will need a AC receiver but either way they still send out a 600n signal as well as the ac

ill be buying an ac wireless receiver for my pc

      bit confused with
IF YOU CAN WAIT. The 7390 was by far the best modem/router available
      do you mean can't wait?

so your saying the 7490 is best but not out and if i cant wait get the 7390
cost dosnt isnt a problem for me i just want something that will serve me without issue for the next couple years
the last router i paid for was back in 2008 *$320 and i rma'd it and got back an inferior product of which i am using now

      • No, you've mis-read my answer.

I DO mean if you can wait.

You specifically asked for an AC modem/router. The 7390 is only wireless N. It's the best wireless N modem/router I've used to be sure, but because you asked for AC, I said if you can wait, wait for the 7490.

If you cannot, as one of the others posted before me, Billion is also pretty good. I'd also consider Draytek. I believe they have AC model out already.

I'm personally not a fan of D-Link, we always seem to be swapping them out for others here at work, but it's up to you.

  • I think dlink dsl2880 could be another option.
