Smart TV - Kogan 32" Agora Smart LED TV (HD) $299

Hi

Am looking to purchase a 32" (max size that would fit) HD or Full HD TV for adult teen's bedroom primarily for gaming, etc. Looking at possibility of moving soon and there is no (digital) aerial access in his room (not going to install this). He can access our family wi-fi internet from his room so am wondering about a "Smart" TV. $299 plus delivery seems quite reasonable but is this a good idea?

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding the Agora Smart 32" LED TV or can suggest other alternatives for this situation? I know nothing about "Smart" TVs. I have been very happy with my own Panasonic HD Viera television and DVD recorder set up, but if available may be too pricy for this particular purpose. Any suggestions? What do you think?

  • What is the end goal for the Smart TV function? If it's to access Free to Air TV content (I.e. regular TV) then it's not going to help - it's only to access internet streaming based content like youtube.

You could try with those rabbit ear antennas but reception will be variable and will depend on where you live.
Alternatively if you are running Windows Media Centre on your main TV (I assume you aren't) and he has an XBOX 360 you could set it up as an extender.

If you just want to access movies and downloaded TV shows etc. - you could get an apple tv or WD live or something similar and then stream from a NAS or a computer on the wifi network. Actually the Smart TV may even be able to do this - not 100% sure.

    • Thank you for answering. The main goal for the Smart TV is for gaming (WiiU). Secondly my son is interested in the internet capabilities; primarily that YouTube aspect. The analogue tv he uses is in dire need of replacement as it is going green! We both rarely watch any television programs but those that we do are usually pre-recorded with the dvd recorder and watched later, or saved to dvds. He wouldn't bother with those rabbit ear antennas; just not that interested in tv.

Not running Windows Media Centre on Panasonic Viera link. That setup has been quite suitable for us, and dvd has an excellent memory; everything is simple and no problems. If you want you can record 2 shows and watch another … probably only happened once or twice though. I chose Panasonic over the others on the basis of picture quality at that time.

We are still managing on a 12GB wifi plan at the moment but we would reconsider this at a later date if we really wanted more; just not been an issue so far.

Don't think we would wish to access movies or download tv shows. Basically seeking something of fairly good picture quality with the option for YouTube etc. We are only looking for a 32" for his bedroom. He doesn't want a 3D tv either. Don't know if it is true or not but read elsewhere there is no real visual difference in a HD to a FHD in a 32" - Do you have an opinion on this?

I know very little of Smart TV's. Only advice I received was not to purchase a plasma because pauses can cause screen burn outs apparently… then someone else advised me LCD could do the same! Don't understand all these price differences at all; Kogan HD $299, Panasonic HD LED LCD $449, Samsung FHD LED LCD $549, Samsung FHD LED LCD 100Hz (?) $587, Sony FHD LED LCD $579, Sony Bravia KDL32W670A FHD LCD $566 ..

Which tv would you be inclined to consider for the purposes I mentioned? Priority would be to be visually sharp and fast. Read some reviews where one suggested one had a good picture but sounded tinny (Sony Bravia), another where one was freezing or slow (Samsung UA32FF5500AM). I would rather spend extra for one without any problems like that.

We shall have a look at the Good Guys sale this weekend but I wouldn't be surprised if we still cannot decide. Hope it is not too noisy in there to be able to listen to them clearly.

Thank you once again for any suggestions you can make.

    • Back again. Just checked my emails and now I find, shock horror, that Kogan is selling a "Agora Smart TV Quad Core HDMI Dongle" for $79. I have never heard of these before. Apparently these can turn any television into a Smart TV with a free HDMI port. Anyone know if these work okay or if these are viable? Any advice on this?

Heading down to Good Guys and JB HiFi to have a look at what is in those stores.

  • Also from Kogan you could buy an android wireless keyboard/keypad to go with it for $39.

As these items would supposedly work on any TV to make it "Smart" would you recommend they are worth the effort of purchasing separately or should I just buy a Smart TV?

    What do you think?
