On the lookout for a decent used washing machine in Sydney, NSW….anyone out there looking to sell? Thought I'd try here as Gumtree is full of scammers and overpriced poor units.
Cheers!

Ah touche…. Touche.
If they are overpriced, email and offer what you think. Because if they are overpriced, they're not going to sell them anytime soon.
Thanks for the advice. I do this, but many stick to their guns and eventually find an unknowledgeable buyer who is willing to pay if they are in no rush. Cheers.
Yeah, true in many cases.
I've seen a few cheap ones in the local Salvation Army store. They have to check electrical stuff before selling too. Not sure how MUCH checking though. Ask if they've run it right through the normal wash cycle before buying.
I'd avoid front loaders. Especially second hand ones. People usually get rid of them because the rear bearing starts to wear out and makes a racket, or the front seal starts leaking.
An old Hoover upright would be my choice. There's not a lot of parts in them and the ones that fail the most are available on ebay. (Water inlet valve, water pump, timer, and brake solenoid.) The idea being, if you or someone you know pulls things apart they can probably fix it easily and cheap. The money saved easily makes up for the supposed water savings on front loaders, especially after buying special front loader powder.
For example one of these (or older):

But not one of these:

We've owned one of the first type for a couple of decades. The second type MAY still be ok, but I haven't had a close look at their timers. (I believe from their feel they may not be mechanical. I do know they don't make a firm 'click' as you turn them.) You can give the model number to ebay sellers and ask though, if your set on those newer machines.
So use ebay instead, works for me.
Yup, try this as well, but generally a lot less machines compared to Gumtree. Thanks for the advice though, will continue to monitor it.
supermarket/community noticeboards are reasonable
put up your own wanted ad.
what are you after? front loader? top loader? 5 kg? 7kg? washer and dryer/2 in 1?
Washer only. Something 7kgs or bigger….top or front loader is fine. Cheers.
Oh - and ask on Freecycle. If it's only a water inlet valve gone, you can either just swap the hose to the hot valve and turn the switch to 'hot', or, they are about $15 delivered from ebay and fairly easy to replace. (From memory, one clip, one wire, and a hose clamp.) Even a dead water pump is not beyond most people. (Two wires, a couple of hose clamps and a couple of bolts/screws.)
Thanks for the advice, mate! That's great!
You're welcome. Just had another thought… If you ask on Freecycle that is. Avoid Fisher & Paykel. Specifically ask for the old Hoover/Simpsons with mechanical "clicky" dial. The F&P's have an electric motor with no gearbox and a computer board. i.e. They are not worth repairing unless a tech has specifically told them it's just a sensor that needs replacing.
