I'm cheap, and I'm coming to Melbourne

I booked in that Airasia deal that allowed a very exciting $73 return fare from Perth.

And I hit town this weekend.

In typical tight-arse fashion, I have booked $22/night at All Nations Backpackers. And because I'm a cheap SOB and have committed funds already to the Carlton-Collingwood game and going to Der Raum afterwards, I need cheapo places to eat for the meantime.

I'll be central Melbourne, but happy to walk 2-8km for a cheap (sub $10 per person!) but good meal. Also more than happy to read about other cheap things to do about the town of Taronga.

    • Don Dons++

  • Any cafe or dumpling bar in Chinatown will get you a sub $10 meal.

Best cheap place to eat is probably Flower Drum at the top end of chinatown.

    • Good place, but isn't Flower Drum quite upscale and expensive (over $10 for main meal)?

      • No, you don't even need to look at the menu. Just ask the waiter to bring what ever he feels is the chefs best dish.

  • Flower Drum is the cheapest Chinese Restaurant in Australia.

    • Well. I've never been there since I'm in Sydney, but according to their entry at yourRestaurants.com.au:

      Entree: $7.50-$21
      Mains: $37-$150
      Dessert: $12.50-$16
      Degustation menu: 6 courses, $158
      Set menu: 4 courses, $60
Four-course luncheon $60 per person Six-course Dinner $158 per person
Payment accepted: MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club and American Express

      Not my kind of "cheap"…

      • I've been there on someone else's dime - I couldn't afford to go myself.

Unless there's another Flower Drum somewhere. The famous one, though, is very expensive.

        • Are there two different Flower Drum restaurants or are the Internets wrong? Internet says its expensive, commenters say its cheap.

@neil: Lol sorry all. Just a joke that I'm sure some Melbournite get. Its basically the most expensive Chinese restaurant in Australia.

  • There is this stall in the food court, where you have to enter through HSBC bank at Swanston & Burke, it is selling asian food alacarte style. BUT look for 'CRISPY CHICKEN RICE' which is $5+ and you can have all the chinese tea you want free.

  • Hawkers Inn, Russel St.

    Chicken rice la.
