USB Wall Charger

Hey Guys,

Hoping someone could help me out.
I am trying to find a USB wall charger with 4 ports on it similar to this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4-Port-USB-Charger-Home-Wall-Char…
iPod-/150947683012?pt=AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item23252edac4

I want to buy one that is certified to work in Australia though. I'm not risking burning my house down for saving $10.
Any links anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

The OP asked for a device that was legal (certified safe) for use in Australia.

You linked to a device being sold and supplied by a Hong Kong business - "This Product is offered and supplied by Kogan HK Limited".

The OP would be deemed to be the importer of this device. Although the picture of the item shows that it has insulation on the pins, there is no Safety Certification for Australia displayed.

Bunnings (the larger stores) have an approved device by Arlec, but it has 2 ports.

      • Thanks A3.
I'll keep this one in mind. I work near a bunnings so at least I can check this one in store. If you happen to own one, do you know if the prongs on the back fold in?

I do not own one, but to my knowledge none of the local (legal) dual port wall chargers have pins that fold.

HPM and ARLEC both have Dual Port USB Chargers - I believe that both brands are sold by Bunnings.

Depends if you want 2.1 amp output on multiple ports at the same time with a compliant device. If you do, you may need to lower your expectations, you won't find a compliant device with 4 ports.

You can get a good (and cheap) 1.0 Amp (per port) charger with 4 ports here:
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/adaptors-power/jackson-mains-sur…

It will be quite slow to charge tablets, you want 2.1 amp output for that.

You can get a good 2 port charger with 2.1 amp output each, at the same time, here:
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Tab…

There are others that offer 2.1 amp but they usually don't provide it on multiple ports at the same time - the Kensington does.

Edit: This is the URL posted by the OP:

    • You know something jonsnow.

Not so worried about the slow charge speed, and that Dick Smith one looks great. I am just far too terrified of burning my house down for the sake of saving $10 and buying from an eBay store in China.

Really appreciate all the effort you went to in your response.

    • From personal experience I wouldn't recommend the one listed from ebay. I purchased this unit and had four devices plugged in, while I was going to sleep one night I heard all of my devices beeping. I came out only to find the unit overheating, I disconnected and in the morning it was not good to use again. This item is all over ebay and it took me ages to find a different make of unit which I'm now trying.

  • Hey Guys,

I thought I might post my images of my Kogan AC USB wall charger..

Started to smoke up today after 2years of use.. house tripped out was glad because there could of been a fire :(

  • Main thing to watch out for is the max total output. As an example CotD had one recently which boasted a 2amp port+3 x 1amp ports. The downside comes in when you find the total output for the whole device is only 2.4amps. This means you'll already experience slowed charging after simply plugging a single device in while the fast charge port is in use.

    Best advice I can give
http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/jackson-4-out… something like this. Personally I'd find a 2outlet one then use a 2outlet AC-USB adapter with it. This particular one claims to feed 1amp directly to each outlet, so would indeed do the job of powering 4 devices though. No 2amp for those hungry tablets being the downside.
