Free to air - Digital vs HD TV

Silly question….
Why the channel 9 coverage is much clearer on foxtel compared to directly from antenna. Is it possible to get hd channels by installing additional receiver?

  • Are you getting Foxtel in HD and Free-to-air only in SD? And if you're talking specifically about the cricket, I believe it is sourced in HD by Nine, but stupidly, they only show it in SD on their main channel. Foxtel may take the HD feed, which could explain why it looks better there, at least if you have Foxtel in HD.

    • yes i am referring to cricket. I dont have foxtel - watched for couple of hours at neighbours and came back home to find that my free to air is no where close. from your description, it looks like that nine HD is only availble on foxtel - well, thanks for clarifying. afterall, beggers cant be choosers.

      • On a few occasions in the past, when the cricket has run overtime, Nine has transferred the cricket to their HD channel GEM, and the picture looks much better. I wish they'd always do that for the cricket.

  • Emibel19 is most likely right, but there is another possibility that I am all too aware of.
I was, and remain horrified by the lousy mess my Samsung TV makes of displaying SD content especially, but frankly it applies to any content that isn't at its native 1080 resolution.
The irony of having bought a 7 star energy rated television that requires the constant use of a PVR that upscales the resolution in a manner that makes watching SD channels tolerable, is not lost on me..
