Pinhole Camera over ATM Pin? [UPDATED]

I noticed a local CBA ATM had a camera over the pinpad. The Camera looks like it's been made into the machine, but if it has. Why does CBA need to record your pin strokes?

Picture here I've done some googling, came to this facebook post. Not even CBA seems to know?

This image was taken with the inside face camera. So picture it being directly ontop looking straight at your pin.

Report it? Is it normal? I have no idea…

UPDATE:

Our security team have advised that the cover for the camera has come loose and is therefore visible. We have sent out technicians to have this repaired as soon as possible. The camera is a part of our new anti-skimming protection on ATM's and ensures the highest security for your accounts and withdrawals you may make via the ATM. Once again, thanks for bringing this to our attention and we hope you have a great weekend!

There we go. Apparently, all the advertising for reporting these camera's was a waste of time and money, as they are now fitting them themselves. Bizarre.

Could be part of a skimming operation? I wouldn't use an ATM if I noticed a camera like that. If I absolutely had to, I'd make sure to shield my pin input.

report it to CBA. it's to catch pins for card skimming

sounds like card skimming to me, report the sucker…. My local now has covers over the keypads to help prevent this….. I still prefer using my hand(not that way sicko's :P )

Go to the bank and confirm if the camera is actually part of the ATM and is not a skimming device.

The camera however should be facing the person and not the pin-pad. I'd say there's a 99% chance that it's a skimming device since the bank has no interest in what your PIN is anyway..

Some ATMS have cameras and if they do, they usually put a sticker on the ATM machine telling you it's there for security purposes (recording the face so they know who tampered with the ATM machine)

This is not part of the normal atm setup. Provide the details to cba fraud team a and the branch manager. We had the same issue in our area and it was linked to eastern European crime gangs.

…… and stick a bit of duct tape over it in the meantime

    • Although well meaning I advise against this. You don't want to be caught up in charges of tampering with the ATM. Just report it.

      • Yep - especially given that (going by following posts) it's part of their machine, pretty dumb idea.

  • report to police. they take these things seriously. details are on http://mypolice.qld.gov.au/blog/2013/07/18/atm-skimming-deviā€¦

  • also what has not been already said here by the looks, order a new card and call up and cancel your current one. your card details are probably known by whoevers doing the skimming now.

Better to just pull out extra cash when you do the grocery shopping and pay via eftpos - no extra charges either.

im staggered that they would need/want to film people entering there pin numbers……. i mean the banks already know what your pin is, how is this any "safer"… it just leaves it more open to attack/hack etc

      full dodgy

      • I didn't get it either, how do they know who's who? Doesn't make sense.

      • haven't they always filmed people at atms?

maybe the camera detects tampering when no transactions are taking place.

        • haven't they always filmed people at atms?

at some they take wide angle pics/vid to keep records of whos using the card in case of stolen card use etc. i can see zero reason why they would spy on you entering your pin number.

from the yes/no/yes/no answers from cba i wonder if its not part of some coverup to stop bad press? things like share price etc are so volatile (specially in the banks) something small can loose them a ton of money.

        • They're not spying on you entering your PIN, it's to record anyone tampering with the ATM.
