And just think, you can team them up with 3 Conti tyres and get the 4th one for free too!!!

  • Try to put a price in title, even if the cheapest range of mags out there. As for conti's, they reviewed very poorly in stopping distances in dry and wet conditions.

    • Yeah, that's why they put them as OE on Merc, Audi, Porsche, BMW, etc.
Ps. Not to mention the first road tyre capable of speeds to 360km/h. But who needs to stop at that sort of speed anyway!!!

ive not had much experience with contis but im sure as with all tyre brands they make cheap crap as well as the expensive supertyres.

pretty sure the ones they made to do 360kph were not $150 a tyre…..

ive had a lot of experience racing on "street tyres" and you would be surprised how much BS there is about tyres. people buying expensive dot approved race tyres only to find out that guys running more normal street tyres were getting faster lap times every time.

        • Totally agree Nosdan! Lot of hype on the top stuff. I had Falken, Yokohama, Bridgestone, Dunlops etc, but now get Achilles for around $100 for 215/45R17, no issues over the last few years and have these on 2 cars. One of the best bang for buck tyres around IMO.

        • nosdan, I agree, there's so much bs around tyres. I've done a bit of closed tarmac racing in street events and on the Island and Sandown too. And likewise, I've seen guys on performance street tyres lapping quicker than those on semis! But let's be honest, if you chose the right size and compound of a decent branded semi slick, your lap times would drop by seconds over running on a typical street tyre?
The biggest issue for most in club level events is the cost. Having to replace a set every couple of meets is beyond most of us, me included!!!

        • But let's be honest, if you chose the right size and compound of a decent branded semi slick, your lap times would drop by seconds over running on a typical street tyre?

actually that was the funny thing. guys running the dot approved semis actually dropped lap times by going back to "street" tyres in the same size etc tyres…. im not talking about the cheap crap they spew at you, i mean going for the top level tyres from the big brands

thoughs/feelings of people on a certain thing are one thing, but its hard to BS when your times lap after lap are better on one setup than another

        • But surely a Semi would wear better in that situation?

        • Isn't that fun… Spending thousands of dollars playing around setting the car up to find out you've actually gone backwards!!!
Gotta say, I think one of the best all round tyres I personally used was actually a street tyre about 15 years ago, the Falken GRB (RS410 I think). We also used to fit up quite a few Yoki A008P on to guys running Targas etc. that were getting some good results.

        • Can't beat a good set of mud Coopers!

          "__________________________________!"

        • Yes, I agree.

        • But surely a Semi would wear better in that situation?

again this was only in my experience with hillclimbs and circuit sprits/track days etc etc, but the faster lap times of the "street" tyres were also getting 3 or 4 times the mileage of the semis. counter intuitive i know, but its how it was. i guess goodyears budget and experience with race/F1 etc might have been the difference where as the "cheaper" branded semis just dont have that experience behind them

to be fair tho, this was a few years back now, maybe its changed but not a lot from my understanding

      • I am only quoting what I saw and read…… I was at JAX a few weeks back getting new tyres and while waiting was reading various magazines on cars and stuff… and there was one article on road testing tyres… and there it was in black and white (and colour) that conti's were worst performing out of all the ones tested… It had worst stopping distances by far dry and wet! I should have taken a photo of the charts showing this. Eagles were way better and some other tyres were even better than the Eagles. Just cos Merc, Audi etc have them on means didly squat. Enthusiasts who buy such cars swap the standard stuff quick smart. Merc, Audi, BMW are 'luxury' in OZ but in Europe are Taxi cars. Service an Audi here in OZ for $2000, same in Europe will cost under $200.

        • Thanks, I know, I've lived in Europe! And you know they don't just make A4s and 318is, you can buy much more luxurious and sportier variants in these brands too?

I'm gonna make it easier for you… I've been in the tyre game for over 20 years now, in retail and import/wholesale. These magazine articles aren't worth the paper they're printed on! Actually, not true, they're worth tens of thousands! Why? Because that's the sort of money it takes to fair well in one of these! For a starter, how do they choose between the multitudes of brands which ones to test? That's easy, it's whoever wants to pay for advertising space in that magazine, (as well as a couple of others thrown in that ultimately finish lower overall)! Or it's the brands that the company assisting the test endorse or sell the most of! And lastly, it's the tyre company that takes the editors and journos out the night before. A Michelin rep mate of mine once told me that he spent 12 grand looking after these guys on accommodation, food, drink and entertainment over the course of the week! Shit, a brand I bought in to the country used to get favourable reviews on a TV show just because we looked after the producer!

As for Conti, they do also make cheaper comfort orientated tyres. Personally I think they're a bit overpriced, but they're definitely not crap.
You mentioned enthusiasts. The only reason they'd take a Pirelli, Michelin or Conti off the car is because they're probably racing it, and they'd be using some type of motorsport spec'd tyre that works well on that type of car like a Yoki, Falken, Toyo or maybe a Bridgestone or Dunlop!
Based on the size, you're probably driving a 4cyl 'drift style' spec'd Honda, Toyota, etc. And nothing against them, as like you said "it's bang for your buck" and that's what you can afford, but you're never going to see a 993 hot lapping the Nurburgring on something like Achilles!

        • These magazine articles aren't worth the paper they're printed on! Actually, not true, they're worth tens of thousands! Why? Because that's the sort of money it takes to fair well in one of these!

amen…… most if not all opinions in magazines etc for at least the last 20 or 30 odd years that i know of have been bought and paid for well in advance. its nothing more than a paid advertisement

as i have said already tho…. that all goes out the window when its serious racing and lap times etc are compared…. little can be hidden when its purely down to the real numbers
