My toddler has managed to smash the screen of our fairly new iPad mini. What's the cheapest way out of this? Repair/ new screen quotes are about $150 and Apple is happy replace it for $240. Can I fix this for a lesser cost?

Try and find a warrantable problem. A dead pixel, top button? Software issues, they will replace the device regardless of the damaged screen. I put an iPad in under warranty, smashed screen could see directly through the iPad to the hardware, but it had 1 dead pixel. Replaced the entire unit.
They no longer replace devices, they now repair them, so if its got a broken screen, you'll get it back with a broken screen or they will request you to pay the fee to have to screen replaced, its not as easy as it use to be. Any preexisting damage also voids your warranty.

We went with the apple replacement when our 4 yr old done the same thing. I thought it was a rip off though. eXtremist do u do iPhone 4? I just smashed mine :(
I do iPhone 4, only $50, the 4S is $60.
the cheapest way is fix it by yourself. it is cheap and safety,but and you can buy the repair parts from ebay or amazon, but if you want to get it with a cheaper price ,you may get it from http://www.cshidworld.com .
