Thai Islands - Has anyone been there lately?

Hey guys,

Heading to Thailand this December. Flying to Phuket and thinking of going Phi Phi, Railay, Krabi, Samui and Koh Tao.

I haven't been in 3 years and was wondering what it's like now? More commercialised, expensive etc?

Also - can anyone recommend places to stay or visit or any other good tips? Budget is about $30 per night on accom.

Thanks

Yes, they're commercialised and it gets worse every year (Koh Samui, Phagnan, Tao). Most hostels are cheap enough ($6-8 AUD a night) if you don't mind sleeping with strangers but rooms for 2-3 can be found for $30/night. Nothing's too much better than anything else and I never book in advance. Show up, ask to take a look and then haggle.

If it's not your thing, I'd avoid the islands during December since everything jacks up in price due to the influx of people attending the Full Moon Parties. If visiting Samui, stay away from Chaweng, it's just a smaller, crappier Patong. Stay on the south or western ends of the island, it's more quieter resort/local and you can head to Chaweng when you want the nightlife.

  • If you can afford it and it is within your budget, visit Rasha Island. It is just divine. Snorkelling in crystal clear waters with colourful fish, take a motorised train ride to the other side for the day trippers. Beautiful resort with a great lunch, swim in the pool with underwater music and swim in the sea with the fish.

  • You are going at Thailand's busiest tourist season so definitely expect crowds.
Important note: Samui/Phangan/Tao will be right in the middle of their monsoon (rainy) season which typically commences in November and ends late January. It's not so much the rain but the ocean and beach conditions become rough and dangerous and may hinder any plans you have for ocean going activities.

If you are after more reliable weather during December, you should stick to the West Coast (Phuket/Krabi/Phi Phi/Lanta).
If you want some quiet time, have a look at the Trang islands.

December is not the time to show up without a booking. Book something ASAP. You'll already find your choices might be somewhat limited due to the closeness of your departure.

You will save nothing by randomly rocking up at a hostel or similar during high season.

Edit: I think Jenny is referring to Racha Island (locals call it Raya Islands).
Well worth a day trip from Phuket. Maybe 30 mins by speedboat.
