Buffalo Technology Linkstation Pro Duo 2 bay NAS - gigabit ethernet + raid0 or raid1 without drives

Hello Everyone,

Thought I might post this, as someone might be looking for a good reasonable priced dual bay NAS that can do raid1 (and raid0, but who'd use that, right).

Buffalo Technology Linkstation Pro Duo - $98 without drives + delivery costs (if applicable)

I noticed the Duo model (base model) goes for over $100 on ebay, so the Pro Duo for under a $100 dollars is in my opinion a bargain.

  • It has been this price with HT for years.

    • Wonder if they replenish the stock again.

      • They have never sold out.

  • These are a wonderful NAS drives. I have had one running for ages and it's going strong. The built in utorrent app is also pretty useful :)

    • I'll let you know my thoughts, once I get some hands on. But based on my research they seemed okay at the price point that harris technology is selling them at, don't think I would pay RRP price for them.

    • I was looking (not very hard) for something that can do this. I have a bunch of 2.5" SATA drives that I have ripped from old laptops that I wanted to hook up to the network, and have a torrent app downloading directly to them. Have you got any more info on this?

  • what drives can you use in this?

Is it better than this ?

    • I plan on using 2 x 2tb drives, should look at what else it supports I guess. I noticed that dlink just recently came out with a dns-327, which looks to be a newer variation of the model you posted. Use to like the dlink stuff, but I think Synology is the place to be, but the price tends to be a premium for those.

      • I was checking d web n saw very good review. Was wondering if external USB drives can work with these. 4 tb sata will make it pretty expensive..

        • I don't have one to test, so can't tell you.

Initial impression so far so good. The unit is currently doing a rebuild of the array, as I deleted the raid0 and created raid1. While that happens I copy some data over and get ~42 MB/second which is not bad, but not as fast as say a HP Microserver doing the same thing. But consider the size and power usage here I am happy.

Will order another 2tb drive tomorrow, as I need another drive so I can build up my second unit to also be a 2tb raid1 like the first and I only had 3 drives available to me. Hence the need to buy one more.

Will post back as I tinker in the next week.

        • Thanks a lot for sharing the info. Congratulations for your acquisition..

42 mb/s is over wifi speed right ? thats quite good compared to my router setup which gives 10 mbps max. Any idea if it will perform good with any router or a good router is also required along with it.

If you have a thumb drive then u can test. Does it have ports for drives ? from other websites I see there is only one usb 2.0 port. Update us about your experience.

        • 42 MB/Second is over gigabit.. like I said, its not the fastest unit I have used, but considering the size and price for this thing. It ticks the right boxes for something that works with little or no fuss.

I have a couple of USB drives.. i.e. WD portables etc… did you want me to plug one in and do some tests?

Yes the unit only has the 1 USB 2.0 port.

You could spend more and something faster, but having used a large number of devices to do this task, my requirement this time around was something that just works and can do cifs shares and have raid1.. my only 2 requirements.. didn't care about speed.
