Drivers door key barrel broken can it be replaced?

Hi,

Mates car just go broken into just today, out of all places the Melb Zoo.only thing stolen was his blazer.

ok so they some how broke off the key barrel on the drivers door off his '02 Mitsubishi Lancer( he couldn't find the barrel near the crime scene) he called the Cops, but all the cops did was wrote a report and will mail him a letter if the insurance needs it. But if he was to claim on this i assume it would cost more then getting it fixed privately?

i am not sure how a barrel works, but can he get a barrel made to work with his key? the only solution i could think of was find at the wreckers or ebay for a barrel with a key and install it. But its kinda messy playing around which key opens the door and which keys starts the engine.

any tips be great help.

cheers

If you do have to have mixed barrels in the car, you might be able to at least put the keyed-alike ones on the ignition and drivers door, they are the most commonly used. As far as I am aware, it should be relatively straight forward to swap the drivers and passengers lock.

Yeah a locksmith should be able to fit a matching barrel for you.

  • I had to get mine replaced and so took it to the dealer. Maybe get a quote to decide whether ins claim or what.

Go to wreckers and get an unlocked barrel from same model car. Locksmith can then re-pin to your key.

  • 1) Get a replacement barrel from a wrecker.
    2) Take it to a locksmith and get it set to your original key.
    3) Get a mechanic or workshop to fit it for you. Will take less than an hour, even at snail's pace.

Fit it yourself if you've got some mechanical ability and tools. I replaced the door lock on my BF Falcon a few weeks ago easily enough.

Note that some doors, particularly with central locking, power windows, etc. can be very painful to get back together.
