Hi

if i get a SSD and swap it would it reinstall win7 or is the Win7 recovery thingy within the current hdd?

  • check to make sure you get the right size ssd -i think they come in different thicknesses
btw lag is more likely due to dust buildup around the fan/heatsink. or try defragmenting and clearing some files. (unless you've just gotten used to ssd speed -i can't go back)

you'll need to put windows 7 onto a 4gb usb and install from that.

get the install files from: (haven't tested but looks promising)

after installing win7, you'll have to install all your programs/data

    recommend:
    sony drivers
    antivirus etc.
    office etc.

  • cheers Zaddaz, will looking into it. and make sure i get the right size ssd.

i did free up alot space and defrag it and dusted it. but still same issue

    thanks

This is a software issue not a hardware issue (unless it is over heating and you have fan issues). Not that an SSD won't be faster anyway.

    • im not sure, but i have accidentally dropped once or thrice while at uni in the past, i assume the may have had to many knocks.

      • It will either work or it won't. Pretty much the only reason for 'lag' due to damage is damage to the fans.

  • I'm not sure about thickness but the new Samsung range is rated highly for speed/capacity and price (EVO series I think). I've seen capacities up to 1Tb.

There is no comparison SSD to HDD. EVERY system right back to old Celerons of the Cedar Mill era I've upgraded has left customers smiling from ear to ear when they get their computers/laptops back. You can't go wrong.

As Bruce said, there ARE some software issues as well by the sounds, especially if you're not overheating (SpeedFan should tell you), then it will definitely be a software issue, but it sounds like you're installing clean anyway. Guarantee you'll see a huge benefit.

HINT: If you want the notebook exactly as it came from the factory, I usually do an image copy of the recovery partition (look at and match the structure of your current partitions and copy the hidden recovery one mimicking the structure). You can normally then set this partition on the SSD as bootable, and it will do a full Sony Factory install and copy all drivers and software as it was.

It will be a very fast method to get your system installed, no hunting around for software bits and bobs. The only thing against it is if you don't like your Sony bloatware on it, you may be better off clean install.

  • Hi Turbo-

As someone who does i.t. for a living- the SSD is an option, but you definitely can simply reinstall to your current hard drive & with a few performance tweaks, make it faster than Sony ever did.

And you ought to (if you haven't yet) make your recovery DVD's- which will give you the original, factory image on disc. Do this before you do anything else.

Because you have a valid, legit product key for Win 7 (bottom of the laptop), you can reinstall 7 clean (getting a copy here: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/14709-Windows-7-Dig… ) & activate it with your key. Prior to doing this, go to Sony's site & download the drivers for your hardware.

Basically, what you get doing the install this way, vs. factory, is that you can choose what of Sony's bloatware you really need. Laptops only usually need the "flashcards"- the software which gives the extra uses for the F1- F12 keys- or any specialized media keys. Other than that, you don't need the rest.

From there, I usually do performance tweaks which will make everything you open do so instantly- & I absolutely LOVE to see a customers eyes light up when they get their previously "slow & sluggish" machine back- lol. I hear, "what did you do!? It's never been like this!" "It's so fast, I won't be able to keep up"- lol. And that's with a standard hard drive, mate.

Good luck & hope it all goes smoothly- whatever you decide to do. Just be sure you read about SSD's & how to utilize them properly if you decide to go that way. They require different upkeep than traditional drives in order to get performance & longevity.

    :)

Windows 7 sorts out trim, defrag, super fetch and prefetch all for you. All a typical user has to do is put it in and use it.

  • Yes Bruce, you & I realize that…the typical user may not, hence I recommend a bit of research & reading beforehand.

Nothing is going to stop a "typical user" from installing & running a disk defrag program out of ignorance.

    Cheers
