Mobile Data Plan for Mum

I am looking for a mobile plan for mum. She makes little to no calls and just needs a some data for her smartphone.

I was looking at Yatango, which has a $5 option for 200mb data included and nothing else (calls will be pay as you go). Looked perfect at first, but it seems that it charges in 1mb chunks, which makes it not so attractive anymore, especially if mum is using the phone for a lot of social media (whatsapp and the ilk).

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Edit: She's currently on a super cheap plan (no data). Perhaps maybe a pocket wifi to go along with her current plan? I'm completely out of the loop regarding pocket wifi plans.

    Amaysim
    pay as you go plan

    • 5c per mb download
    • 12c per call and text
    • Uses Optus 3G network 900mhz/2100mhz bands

You can't really go wrong with that

you can get a sim online for $5 you can choose to port you a no. or choose your own new no.
or you can get a new sim and number at a store for $2

  • Thanks issh and JohnWest!

Both actually seem like great plans, especially with a $10 1gb data pack for Amaysim.

Only thing that it has going against it is that it, like Yatango, charges data by 1mb chunks, but surely 1gb should be sufficient?

Thinking aloud here, but Live Connected v Amaysim:

    LC ($12.90):

    • Get $50 of phone calls
    • billed per kb, only 100mb
    • 4G (although probably not that useful on only 100mb and will depend on if she gets a 4g compatible phone)

    Amaysim ($10):

    • slightly cheaper
    • 1 gig of data
    • no phone calls

I wonder if 1gb billed in 1mb chunks is actually more than 100mb billed per kb in real world usage?

I think you'll find that most smart phones these days will generally keep the data connection open unless they either, drop out of coverage, connect to a wifi network or are turned off. There will be exceptions to that as I believe the network can force connections to close if they are congested but its not like you send a message via whatsapp (less than 1kb) and it opens and shuts the connection just for that and you are billed for 1mb.

Obviously KB billing is defiantly better, but MB billing isn't quite as bad as you may think at first glance.

Yeah, it all depends on how you use the data

      • Thanks for the info, Brad. If that's the case it looks like I'll be signing my mum up for the amaysim plan.

  • telstra prepaid with the following 'trick'

get a sim and do a $70 recharge (12 month) on LONG LIFE
    then change plan to SIMPLICITY
15c per min with NO flagfall
    12c TEXT
    10c per mb

CR is good for 12 month but you get MUCH cheaper call rates so your credit lasts a lot longer

  • Aldi Mobile. Runs through Telstra and whatever you recharge with ($15 or $30) lasts 12 months and calls are 12c per minute, texts also 12c.

Data is 5c a MB but if you use a fair bit of data you can buy a pack for $15 a month and you get 2GB. That way your data is covered cheap and the phone calls can come off you prepaid credit that's valid for 12 months.

Works for my wife who makes 5 phone calls a month and uses data on her iPhone.

  • we use savvytel for my mother cause the credit never expiresm it just rolls over every 30 days. she was on Optus but never used the credit in the alotted time. Savvytel is the way to go.

  • +1 for Amaysim.
Changed over to them about a year ago. We are light users on our 2 mobiles and find the as you go plan with no monthly fee and call cost @12c per minute with no connection fee the best.
Data is always automatically available if needed and virtually instant 1G @ $10 connection arranged from your phone when you want it.
We tether to our 2 laptops when travelling & it works well.
