Does the new generation console play old generation games?

I am looking to buy ether PS4/xbox one later when thye come out (not in harry). I looked in the futures of the two consoles and the exclusives. its seem xbox one is better for me and has the games I like. but was wondering which of these consoles will plays the old games? without buying new DVDs or digital copies of the games.
I know the new generation has great games and graphics but there are some games I love to play.

and is there an expectation they are going to be hacked ?
so any idea ?

One big knock on both consoles is that they currently lack any backward compatibility with previous-generation games.

Yeah, wouldnt say current. Neither will.
The one thing both are mentioning is using streaming services to play old games, I don't see that being something introduced into Australia anytime soon though.

As for the hacking, idk. By hacking your xbox you basically forfeit XBL, which is the best part of having an xbox.

    • its kind of disappointment. I really did not expect that. they did it with the xbox 360 and we were able to play the original xbox games I dont know why they did not take the advantage to do it. its seems I have to keep my xbox 360 and buy the xbox one.

      • The Xbox 360 did come out 8 years ago, so I don't really blame them for not supporting it. Xbox 360 is so cheap now, it wouldn't be worth selling it.

      • MS changed to a quite different CPU for the 360. The XB1 is actually much more like the first Xbox than the 360.

Also, they want to kill off the 360 as soon as possible and get you to buy an XB1 (and all new games).

i doubt the ps4 ever will. Its a completely different architecture.

    • So is the Xbox.

Only the Wii U has backward compatibility with it's predecessor, the Wii.

Wii U is backwards compatible. You can play Wii games on the pad, with a wii controller.

  • I would have likely purchased a PS4 had it not been for the lack of backward compatibility and needing psn+ to play games online.

    • Sounds like you'll have to make do with a Wii U or a last gen machine then.

what's wrong with PC? Steam streaming is entering beta, I can't wait.

        • That too.

        • And that I can go to GOG.com to buy and play the 80's & 90's classics on a latest Haswell PC…

      • A Wii U is what I'm going with.

    • Would be pretty hard to put a cell chip into the ps4 and keep costs down though.
