Travel Insurance Direct TID claim

Hi guys

I just went back from my holiday and I used TID for my travel insurance.
During the trip, few incidents happened which I think may be claimable but not sure.

  1. My DSLR camera shutter broke suddently during the trip. I managed to get it fixed in the official service centre overseas and have the receipt of the cost of almost aud 200.

  2. My samsung s4 screen cracked/scratched.
    Haven't repaired this yet.

Can I make claims for these two incidents with TID?

Thanks in advance.

  • Give them a call and ask them. You should be able to. I have claimed from TID before, but it was a robbery. No issues there.

Could be considered 2 claims if they didn't happen at the same time or from same cause. Just tell it happened at the same time.

I've previously claimed water damage to an iphone with another insurer and it covered the cost of a changeover at Apple Store (~$249).

    • marquise/others - what is the claim process for robberies and other more criminal related situations? Are you required to get a written police report etc? Just wondering what the actual substantiation requirements are to the letter, as I know these sort of insurance companies can pick up on these final detail specifics to throw your claim out the window.

      • Yes of course a police report is required. So no matter how inconvenient make sure you get one. Sometimes you need to bribe/pay a fee for a police report.
Receipts or proof of ownership of your items (eg. manuals, accessories).

  • Why don't you give them a ring?

  • You can just submit the claim online. Agree with marquise, tell them it happened at the same time, as you will need to pay two seperate excesses. If you paid to waive the excess fee, then it shouldn't make a difference.
When you complete the form, it will ask you for all the information you need to submit with your claim (proof of purchase, details of the incident, repair costs/quotes, etc).

  • I did with Nexus One…old underwriters were Alliance
    1. They wanted to take to repair place to confirm broken.CPU…blew it up….
    2. Took 30% off value and I negotiated 20% off New price.
    3. Got the cash minus excess….

  • How long after the trip is the insurance cover valid for btw?

    Hi firefoxy

I'm Alison, the representative of TID Australia and I'd be happy to answer your questions.

Your TID policy will cover you for loss, theft and damage to your belongings. As a few others have mentioned in this forum, if it's 2 separate incidents then $100 excess will apply to each claim unless you reduced your excess at the time of purchasing.

You'll need to get a repair quote for your Samsung and submit that with your claim. We also need to see your receipts or credit card/bank statements showing what you paid for the items.

Please note that depreciation will apply unless you specified the items at the time of purchasing and paid an additional premium.

You can submit a claim online through our website https://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/how-to-make-a-claim We'll let you know what documents you need to provide and you can upload them from the website.

We prefer you to submit your claim within 30 days of return but understand that this can often take longer so we will accept claims after this time. However, your policy cover ceases on the end date of your policy or when you return to your home (whichever is first)

If you have any questions please get in touch. My email address is [email protected] or you can contact our Customer Service team on 1300 843 843 M-F 8am-8pm weekends 10am-2pm (Sydney time)

    • What if we lose the luggage, does that mean we have to have the receipt for every clothing in the luggage to claim that? In most instances a photo is usually sufficient. No wonder TID is so much cheaper…. Sometimes certain electronics only came out a year ago, how can the depreciation be 75% then?

      • Who would you recommend as being better, they all seem to do this.

  • Hi Alison,
For my future reference, why does one need the receipt credit card/bank statement, when claiming damage. What if you dont have the receipts, isn't a repair quote proof enough that you have this items. I ask this as I have purchased items in the past via Gumtree (laptop), and I have asked prior to purchase if the seller will provide the receipt, in most occasions, they do not.
In my case I bought an Apple macbook worth about $3k, for 2k, it is registered to me at Apple, but even though it is, it wasn't originally purchased through them, therefore they can not supply me with a receipt as they do not know what it was originally sold for (I read your post and I thought what if this happened to me, and I rang my local Apple store to explain my case, and this is the response I got).
Would a repair report, photos of the damaged goods, boxes and manuals (as marquise and giu above have commented), be good enough for the proof of ownership and do you have to have the receipt to apply depreciation etc. Could you apply depreciation to the repair quote?
I recall my father being covered (covermore insurance)for loss of watch and camera a couple of years ago, the only thing he had was the boxes, so they asked him to provide photos showing the serial# or barcode and he was covered, minus the depreciation and excess.

A little late, but may be worth it for others searching this topic. As you mentioned TID and others need the original receipts to calculate original value and depreciation. Depreciation rates for insurance companies are very steep, much higher than what the ATO allows you to claim.

TID probably did not respond because according to their terms and conditions:
"Where you do not provide proof of purchase or ownership, your item may be depreciated by a maximum of 75% even if it is specified and you have paid an additional premium."
      http://service.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/customer/portal/…

      Pretty harsh.

      • petestrash, never too late mate.

We must all be wary of all the clauses ins. companies use to NOT pay you. Southern Cross Travel Insurance will only cover with a receipt, no matter what, so in this case Covermore are a better choice (at least when my dad made his claim).

TID and SCTI it seems would not cover, therefore my dad would not have been covered for any of his losses, by the way the reason he did not have the receipts was, their home was broken into and they lost many of their small electrical items, and a 32 or 37" LCD they had, as well as thousands in Jewellery, including 3 or 4 TAG Heuer watches (my brother is a big TAG fan!).
Anyway, their home insurance company sent them to Ted's Camera… for their replacements, but Ted's did not or do not supply them with receipts.

In this case SCTI would say you don't have a receipt therefore can't be covered, and TID would only cover you for 25%!

My wife reminded me that about 10 years ago, we claimed damage to a watch and a pen (yes a pen, a graduation gift (montblanc about $300.00), without receipts, Covermore covered us with a damage report/quote.

  • TID is great, I have used them every time I travel. I had an incident on one of the trips where I left my camera bag in the back of the taxi. Had my laptop, dslr, compact and cash… TID replaced the DSLR with the same model and gave cash back for the other items (I had all receipts, laptop was a year old and got the full amount back)
More recently we went away and both dropped our iPhones on our cruise, went to apple and had them replaced at cost of $249 each (apple won't repair screens) spoke to TID who said it was fine to do that but was going to charge the $100 excess twice because they were separate incidents… I never submitted the claim :(

    • I believe you have quite sometime to put your claim through, it may be worth your while checking out.

    Hi,
As far as I am concerned DO NOT USE Travel Insurance Direct.
I travelled to Cyprus with my daughter had no problems.
I picked up my hard suit cases in Brisbane and rechecked in to Cairns.
When I got to Cairns I grabbed my cases and was in a rush, the wife was waiting for me, when I got home and went to unlock the case I noticed some one had forced one of the locks open, I opened the other unpacked and then noticed the suit case was smashed in a corner.

Rang TDI up and explained what had happened and all seemed cool, they told me to fill in on line which I did, sent pictures of the case and then, OH MY GOD you do not have a receipt, what a bloody crime that is.

Then they asked me to go and get a quote on getting the case fixed.
What a joke… who is going to fix a case and lock and give their word it will last on the next trip.
I put it back on them and said, tell me who is the repairer for hard suit cases in Cairns and show me ONE person that you have successfully repaired a smashed case and lock in Australia.
NOT ONE…….. because they never have and never will, there is no one that will repair hard cases that are smashed, unless its a $800 dollar + my claim is $250.00, its not even viable to fix a $250 suit case.

This is the kind of rubbish we have to put up with with these up and coming insurance companies, they just make you jump through hoops and hope you will go away, if it was an elderly person having this problem, they would have no chance, I'm not but as anyone in business I don't have the time to waist on this and thats what they hope for.

I am now over if they pay the claim, but I am going to pay my sweet office girl to sit on every chat line for ever advising people to stay well clear of Travel Insurance Direct.
Any one claiming they have had such a great time with Travel Insurance Direct, show me a copy of the cheques and show me a copy of you bank statement showing the payment.

Do your self a favour go to a well know insurance company, pay the extra.
I had American Express Insurance 8 years ago, my bags were lost in Europe for over 24 hours, I contacted them and they paid for ever thing I needed, the bags turned up three days later and they still paid every penny.

My cases were damaged by the airline, yes I should have taken it up with them, but I did not notice until I got home and why should I, I brought Insurance, right……

I have sent them all copies of travel doc's, airline tickets, photos of the case, and a quote to replace it, I have spoken to them 3 times and been told they need 10 days, now they tell me they need another 15 days?
How long did it take them to take the money off me for the policy 10 seconds.

Please support the companies that have been in Australia for years, the companies that make this country what it is, not some fly by night.

Yes I made the mistake of buying insurance from Travel Insurance Direct to save a few dollars, but don't waist your time.

Here is a list of what they want now:

    • Who do u recommend for travel insurance?

  • To be fair to TID, from memory when I last read the T&C's I'm pretty sure they did mention receipts being required.

When you were unable to provide the reciepts, they requested you get a quote for repairs.

Cairns may not be a big centre, but is has a reasonable abount of tourists. Surely there is a shop there that sells luggage and they could have provided you with a letter stating the case was not economical to repair and give a quote on a replacement bag…

    • "Surely there is a shop there that sells luggage", don't be so sure, no, you'll be hard pressed to find many/any of these places, sign of the times, replace society, not repair. Many of those businesses have gone out of business long ago.

      • I did say "sells luggage", not repair luggage.

  • I dropped my S4 while travelling to the states 2 months ago, the screen had cracked.

I lodged a claim online and supplied all the necessary documents. Obtained and supplied a quote of $250 for a new screen. Was reimbursed $150 ($250 less $100 excess).

  • Sounds like you should only use TID if you're the kind of person who scans every receipt and files them in the cloud.
