Online Education?

Hi all, I'm looking to do some online studying, however, I don't know what's available. Could somebody help me please? What's available, including options from a university?

What do people recommend?

Thank you!

If you are on a pension, think about talking to Centrelink as there may be Student Supplements.

heaps of others. just google MOOC or massive open online courses. I typed MOOC into google and the first link is a list of MOOCs.

I have a whole list at home, there's quite a few places doing it now, but coursera is definitely a well advanced and thorough one until I can/you can find the others that might have courses particularly interesting you.

If you're studying for free that is - MOOC's. Not sure about paid courses and student supplements as holdenmg mentioned.

    You've asked this question before…. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/112498

  • Use iTunes to access "iTunes U" (possibly even on non-Apple platform, ie, Windows PC).

To fill-in gaps (eg, Maths & Science), cf: KhanAcademy.org

To learn Nuclear Engineering (on next gen -safe- nuclear reactors), get involved (free) in the Energy from Thorium community…

They just held their big, annual conference (at which, Hans Blix was among the well-known speakers, because next gen nukes, based on Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor technology will actually -consume- spent fuel from earlier reactors).

EnergyFromThorium.org (or search YouTube.com for Thorium Remix)

  • Tabor College is based in Adelaide but does great online diploma/degree courses. The majority are Christian courses, but they do have students from all over the place. You can HECS-debt them if you're an Aussie, or take them for credit & pay upfront, or just audit them.

  • Thanks for the replies guys. I really appreciate the help!

I'm looking at the websites now.

  • Haha wow i hope you have the discipline to follow through whatever you choose. Haha it's been a yr!

  • What is the point in doing this? No employer will give any credit to an online course, they are a waste of time. You are better off enrolling in a real university, then listening to lectures and attending night time tutorials.

    • Wow, is this really true???

Think about it. Whats stopping you (the student) getting your mother, your friend or paying someone smart to do your online homework and test. No employer will take these courses seriously and will probably think you're a joke if this is all you have on your resume.

      • Can confirm. None of my employees expressed much interest in my self-studied education. If you want something that is worthwhile, pay for it and get an official certification or a diploma.

  • I'd never ask someone else to do my own work…

  • Does anyone else have an opinion on these online certificates?

  • I'm still trying to find more information about this. Could someone help me out?

EDIT: I thought online education would be well-known on here, but I guess not?

    • http://www.open.edu.au/ is fine, they provide actual undergraduate degrees. Don't waste your time with Udemy though if you want professional certification.

  • Does anyone have experience with online education?

    • I have bought udemy courses but more for own knowledge.

I am enrolled in my second coursera course.

I am planning to list them on my linkedin profile, but after noting answers to some questions in my assignments online (was googling to try and get some more info and the actual question/answer popped up) I would say this takes away credibility somewhat to a 'good score' on an online course such as a MOOC provider.

If you do a proper online course with a proper university/paying institution that is mor eformalised e.g. written tests or formal online exams that are more stereotypical university like, then yes I believe online courses would be a good start to getting a foot into a particular job or new industry.

Otherwise I would take free online MOOC courses as more of a sign of your commitment to extra education, and more of a good talking point and thing to make your personality seem better. Not seriously as a bachelor degree or other paid course in an institution would get you though.

    • I've done many online courses but purely for interest's sake so I don't care if I get a cert or not. Surely with a handle like yours you're not looking to get a job?

You seem to have been given the answer on multiple occasions, but keep asking the same question in the hope that someone will give you a different answer. Maybe attending a real university would be good for you.
