Flights to Europe May 2014

Looking to book flights to Europe in May next year.
Wouldn't mind a stop over for a couple of days somewhere on the way there and back home

I'm not that great a flyer so prefer premium economy or business with a decent carrier.

the cheapest i have found for business is Cathay Pacific via Melb > HK > Paris then on the way home Paris > HK > Melb for $6900

searching the flight sites dont return much in premium economy.
do i need to do some trickery for cheaper flights? do a stop over in another country perhaps?

any ideas?

It all depends on a couple of factors:

    (1) Is price the most important factor in your consideration?
If price is the most important factor, consider China Southern @ under $4600. It's good value for money-wise since you get a fully flat bed and a great product when flying the A380 from CAN to Europe. Vietnam Airlines is also often quite cheap at $4000< but their seats are deep recliners.

If you prefer a higher tiered experience such as Singapore, Emirates, Cathay Pacific, then I suggest visiting my summary of the major airlines business class here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122321

    (2) Are you tied with any frequent flyer program
This is an important point for some, since business class can rack up a lot of miles. For example, Malaysia Airlines is not so value-friendly unless you actually fly on, and use their actual frequent flyer program.

    (3) How many stops are you willing to make?
Often, mixing economy and business class fares can be cheaper than flying in full business class all the way. Bestflight have options listed on their website.

Also, be aware that Business class to Europe will not always be on the same metal or the same seat - for example, whilst Cathay flies their new Cirrus seats ex. Australia, you might find yourself in their old coffin seat when flying to Europe. Best to do your research.

    My suggestion:
    Budget Business Class - $4600
China Southern Airlines (Value-wise, and it's even better if you're with Skyteam)

    Mid-Tier Business Class - $5600
Malaysia Airlines (often quite cheap, and they do codeshares with KLM.)

    A-Tier Business Class - $6800
Etihad Airways (you can get codeshares with Virgin too)

    Premier-Tier Business Class - <$8000
    Singapore Airlines

I got about $6850 for MEL- AUH - CDG and CDG - AUH - MEL direct with Etihad.

I've never sat in Premium Economy myself, but I've heard that a lot of the perks are pointless and have been cut. e.g. priority boarding with Cathay has been non-existent. Priority disembark is also strange - you get off the plane before Y paxs, but still have to wait with them for luggage since you don't get priority luggage as PE.

For Premium Economy, I'd say the most decent option is Qantas - although given that most PE cost between 3k-4k to Europe, I rarely find them to be of any good value (unless they're on sale).
