Baby carrier - up to toddler size

Hi. I'm doing a bit of overseas travelling early next year with a 1+ year old. She doesn't fit in the old Baby Bjorn anymore… and googling baby carriers, came up with some options - Manduca and Ergo, seem pretty highly recommended, but come with a $120+ price tag.

I mostly need it for the plane trip, otherwise, we will be walking, briefly carrying and mostly using a stroller, so I really don't want to spend more than $50 on one, if I can get away with it.

Does anyone have any ideas / suggestions? Thanks.

  • Most airports and airlines let you use your stroller until you board the plane, the airline will take your stroller and put it away for you and it will be ready for you when you get off the plane. So I think traveling with both the baby carrier and stroller is a little redundant. It's better to invest your money in a good backpack, so you can push the stroller or hold your toddler's hand while walking or carry the toddler in your arms!
Also, depends on your destination, trying to put the stroller, the baby carrier, plus all your luggage in a taxi could be a problem.
I think baby carrier is only good if you're planing a lot of walking and you can't use a stroller, e.g. bush walking.

    • Thanks for your input Nancycat.

I should have added that I won't be using a stroller at the airport / plane. My folks should have a stroller organised on the other end. It is only in anticipation of not being able to get a spare seat for the flight, and the not-so-small bubs probably can't fit in the bassinet and will be sitting on my lap. On an 8-hour flight, this is going to be challenging! Hence, I was hoping to get a carrier, so she and I are able to rest a bit more comfortably (without her wriggling) etc.

  • Could you try selling the baby bjorn to offset some of the price of the ergobaby?

    • Wow… so tempted! :)

My workmate gave me her old Baby Bjorn that goes up to 90cm (I don't know about weight)… but I assume that if it can handle babies up to that height/length, I would be able to get away with using that one, on the plane.

Thanks for finding it though… I really am tempted now. :)
