Laptop RAM (8GB)

Hey, I was looking to buy 8GB RAM for my laptop and from just looking at stores like MSY, is it just me or have prices for RAM increased in the last two years?

Is there a better place to buy computer components from?

  • Yeah memory prices have definitely gone up significantly, not much to be done about it. MSY will usually have the best value.

    • It's almost doubled for the same capacity. Who would've thought that would happen

  • Umart has better value atm

  • I bought 4GB of RAM for like $20 about a year ago, so there you go :P

I should have bought like 10 of them :( Since when did tech go up in price, what even?

    • Hahah did you buy it on ozbargain? I remember I bought 4GB ram just before that deal went out. Oh well :)

But they have gone up right?

      • Prices are going up because DDR4 is coming this xmas, plus the fact that many memory producers like Samsung have switched to making NAND flash memory in their factories because of the growth of SSD's, smartphones and tablets. As such, there is a general shortage of RAM and subsequently suppliers are doing a bit of price gouging.

One of the Hynix factories burned down last year. That's also affected the price of not only RAM but also everything else that uses DRAM, such as video cards.

        • Did not know about the imminence of DDR4, cheers for the info :)

        • Seems counterintuitive that a the release of a newer technology would increase the price of older tech.

Thanks for the explanation though! The others do make sense, SSD prices have dropped dramatically in the past few years.

        • The problem is with manufacturers and retailers as well. There was a period of time where hard drives were really cheap. Like we're talking 2TB drives cheaper than they are now. Then there was a flood in Thailand which meant that there was a shortage of hard drives, so prices increased, but you'd expect the prices to have decreased by now, but they've stayed pretty constant, meaning if people are still willing to buy, they'll continue to sell at a higher price.

It makes it worse because the HDD business is pretty much a duopoly between WD and Seagate, I don't think Hitachi and Toshiba get that many sales compared to the big two.

I think that's the issue with RAM here too.
