Looking to take wife for a 5-7 day holiday around Boxing Day to 5 jan.
As we are going to EU later in the year trying to keep costs down.. So prob Asia might be best option.

Been to all capital cities in AUS might consider cairns or tassie but prefer o/s.
I have about 170000 velocity points so prefer to use that first.
Raratonga Cook Islands, its different but beautiful, VA fly there too.
If you don't mind flying budget airlines then you have a choice of
NZ,Malaysia,Singapore,Fiji,Vanuatu,Indonesia,Brunei (Borneo), Thailand. All have fares for under $800pp return during that time period
Keep an eye on people selling tickets on ebay. Get in writing that the name changes are included and try to only buy for the dates you actually want, AND buy from a reputable seller.
I've done it once and it worked well.
SYD - LAX is under 50,000 miles one way, and taxes and not too bad.
You could also redeem with Singapore Airlines and fly pretty much anywhere around Asia (35,000 miles to 60,000 miles depending on where you want to go).
Didn't bother mentioning Europe, since you're going there anyways.
So you've got a couple of options in front of you (in terms of mile redemption).
