Hot water system- pilot gas light

Got a gas hot water system where the pilot light goes off regularly. I am interstate and house is in other state and I can't go and physically see the issue

The plumber is saying to replace the unit as it's already 10 yrs old , replacing the pilot light won't solve the issue

Any suggestions?

  • Get pictures of the unit, buy a unit that has fittings that are the same, either DIY or get a handyman to install it for you. Try serviceseeking.com.au and get a whole bunch of quotes.

So replacing the unit is the only option?
Only changing the pilot light won't resolve the issue

  • This is just my experience.
Most pilots go out due to problems with the flue.
In the flue there is a baffle and sometimes this is not installed or is missing.
Also on top of the flue is a metal cap or "hat" that keep out the weather, birds, pests etc. Now the baffle and cap help to keep the wind blowing out your pilot.
You can easily see if the cap is there but to check the baffle you will need to look down the flue with a flashlight and you will see a sheet of metal up to a meter long hanging in the flue. If you can see through to the heater then your missing the baffle.
Even if the heater is set up properly, in strong winds, occasionally pilot blows out, but it is rare. Hope this helps.

  • Thanks , much appreciated
