ThinkPad Yoga or Surface Pro 2?

Which would you get?

Here is some info about the Lenovo thinkpad yoga:
http://shopap.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/yoga-series/…

For price comparison (with same performance config)
i5, integrated gpu 4400, 128gb, 4gb ram, full hd resolution with Wacom digitizer.

Surface pro2
$1276 = $1126 (sp2 @ jbhifi) + $150 type keyboard

Thinkpad yoga
$1628

General pros

SP2

  • lighter (~1.58kg vs 1.155kg = ~400grams)
  • greater portability. I.e use purely as tablet

Thinkpad yoga

  • larger screen (12.5" vs 10.6")
  • 2 x 3.0 usb
  • $11 upgrade to wifi dual band ac
  • 4 in 1 card reader

Let me know what you think!

  • It depends on what you need.
Lenovo is an ultrabook that can function as tablet, with proper keyboard and touchpad.
While surface pro is primarily a tablet that can offer ultrabook functionality with so so keyboard and touchpad.
Decide based on what primary usage is as the secondary functions are somewhat painful on both,
e.g Thinkpad yoga is a heavy tablet and surface pro will not be very comfortable to prolonged typing.

I have to say my answer is exactly the same as SpaceNinja - just depends if you want the detachable keyboard vs larger, heavier screen.

This is a great comparison I've been using because I'm looking for a hybrid at the moment as well:

Between the two, I would get the Surface as I had a Transformer Prime and absolutely loved using it for reading and on the go as a tablet, but then having the keyboard when needed. This time around though I'll probably be waiting for Black Friday and waiting for some of them shiny new Haswells be released/drop in price.

  • Everything I read about the Surface Pro 2 makes me think I would be better off with a real laptop
    Especially given relatively same price
The Yoga is intriguing and would seem to be a good usable laptop
I wonder irl how useable it is in tablet mode
If I could get hands on with 1 the Yoga would get my vote and I trust Lenovo

Although I have just about decided to hold off a little for a Win 8 tablet/hybrid
Dell and others will be flooding the market soon and I think the price will come down
Plus V2 is often better and cheaper (like Pro2)

why do you say that curiously? I'm pretty conflicted as well, the issue I find I guess is that as much as I'd like Surface Pro 2 isn't exactly a tablet, weighing at 1kg+ you wouldn't as easily be able to use it as an iPad for example.

And then at the same time, disadvantages of using SP2 as a laptop - screen is quite small and might not be able to use as easily in certain situations (on your lap on the train for example).

This was the review that made me pause
    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/10/surface-pro-2-less-th…
The review of Surface 2 was titled "more than a tablet" and was quite praising
The Pro 2 though seems not quite a laptop
Anyone happy with a tablet+kb as a laptop replacement now may be even happier with a Pro2
But it seems a step down to me - and at a massive price
I had a good look at the Samsung series 7 tablet posted here yesterday - half the Pro 2 price
But I think if I can hold out 6 mths - at least till new year - the market will be flooded with new models and all these early entries will be cheaper

Thinkpad Yoga and Yoga 2 Pro are coming out.

    Yoga Haswell

Yoga 2 Pro is okay if you don't really care about Pen. High resolutions screen.
    http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/yoga/yoga-2-pro…

I really use Wacom pen, so the Yoga 2 Pro just seems to be touch (or you use one of the ipad rubber tip pens - which is pretty junky).

    • such high res on that sized screen seems like a bit of a waste/really unnecessary..

My employer presented me with a ThinkPad Yoga for testing over the last weekend.

    • Pros: very fast resume for a laptop. Excellent response times for screen rotation. Almost could replace my ThinkPad X230t, with the exception of the X230t being "upgradeable" (I've maxed out the RAM at 16GB so I never run out of memory despite having Premiere Pro, Photoshop, InDesign all running simultaneously!)

    • Cons: very heavy tablet. Held my wife's iPad in one hand easily, whilst the Yoga felt like twice the weight (1.6kg?). Limited upgradeability as RAM is all on board.

  • Looking for a recommendation of Yoga or Yoga 2 pro
Below is the summary of the cheapest for each
    Important differences seem to be
Yoga 2 is bigger 13.3 vs 12.5 with higher res screen
But Pro 2 is lighter by 0.5 pounds
Pro 2 has larger hdd 256 vs 128

Seems the only reason to get the Yoga is for the Pen right?
