Not really, with Newsgroups you choose what you want and you download it, end of story.
It doesn't need to connect to a thousand random people, or upload anything. (I get that's the point of the seedbox.)
However with a Seedbox you need to start the torrent and wait, then furthermore seed the torrent.
Not to mention the barriers to entry ensure that there's a lot less crap (extras, malware) in Newsgroups.
Agreed. I only use torrents as a back up when unable to get via newsgroups. My uploads count on my usage so torrents wastes a lot of data.
Please understand my uncertainty however is this an appropriate service to store files, music, photos? Thanks in advance ..

This is a downloading service. ie You can download the given amount from usenet using them.
It's not a storage service allowing you to store that amount.
Sure it is, you are free to post anything you want, including stuff you intend to download later (since it has 1915 days of retention) just make sure you download and upload the files every 5 years or so.
However that's not the purpose of the service. :P
While it can be used as backups I would bit. Its primary function is the same as torrents
Both uploads and downloads count towards the 1Tb. They state that retention is '1915 Days'.
I can't see any reason not to have your backups on usenet; you could always encrypt any sensitive information.
I guess it depends how comfortable you are with the world seeing your data encrypted or not. Not for me, but some wouldn't care.
Good price for the block size. If going to download note than 100gb a month probably better off with a better provider like tweaknews
Tweaknews is great and this would serve well as a backup
