  • If I have a router with a USB port which supports storage (Bob Lite) do these offer any benefit over a normal USB HDD? (3TB USB3 Elements WD $120).

    • Generally, yes - speed, so I am told as I had the same question answered at http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/116480

    • My router has usb, the speed is very very slow, about 1MB/s, and my router is belkin DB750, almost the top one.

  • just bought a second hand nas, otherwise will buy this one. even cheaper and 1GB more..

  • The price is great. Thanks for posting

  • I don't suppose it's possible to run Plex or a torrent client on one of these?

Considering upgrading from my 2TB plugged into router to something that will let me download and stream, without going to a full NAS (just yet).

    • There is a torrent client that can be installed on them. Need to research it though as its not straight forward. I didn't it with my 2TB version easily enough. (client = Transmission)

I own this device, this is perfect as a home DIY NAS thingie.

Bought it for $160 (last time it was on sale at MSY). The drive comes with a single core 1.2GHz ARM plug CPU & 128MB RAM embedded in its base unit (and of course an ST3000DM001). You can put a 4TB drive at SATA when you need more space, and another external USB 4TB on the external USB port. So it can virtually be used as a 8TB non-raid NAS.

You can choose to install ArchLinuxARM on this device and you can virtually run anything that you can on a regular NAS. I run SAMBA and miniDLNA on the NAS and XBMC on laptops/desktop PCs, and BubbleDLNA from android devices.

The max transfer speeds I typically get is 30'ish MB/s over gigabit Ethernet, and 15MB/s (on the 5GHz Wifi), 11MB/s (on 2.4GHz, on a good day with less 2.4 networks in the neighbourhood).

      Cons:
Lack of hardware RAID (if you must need it)
Need to learn a bit of Linux (in order to take full advantage from this device).

Do NOT buy if you want a WDTV - Live to connect.
The WDTV box will not connect to files and folders correctly.
It is fine if you want it for a Windows backup / file sharing device, but no good for media shares or network connection for a WDTV device.

Also be aware if you have UPNP (Universal Plug and Play) on your router, by default it will open up ports and create rules like swiss cheese in your router.
I had one and disabled UPNP to close up the firewall.

Great for people who want to access files at home / via the Interwebs, but no good for WDTV Live.

    • Thanks for this, the WDTV windows network share system can become a nightmare.

  • WARNING - This drive IS NOT USB compatible. (although you can share a USB drive that is attached to it on the USB port). LAN only. It is also only worth using with Gigabit LAN as it is ridiculously slow on 100.

    Software is also VERY CLUNKY!

  • Thanks OP, just got one 1 hour ago.

  • nvm
