Complimentary Travel Insurance if paying for Travel via Paypal using Platinum Credit Card?

I know that I have to prepay at least $500 of my travel costs in order to be eligible if paying direct.
The underwriter for my bank card is Assist Zurich.

  • So what is exactly your question?
You mean can you pay by PayPal to be eligible? You need to look carefully at the wording in the terms and conditions, then also confirms with them over the phone (get the person name for future reference?
Different banks have different T & C (even with the same underwriter)

    • That is correct - If I pay by Paypal using my platinum credit card, will I still be eligible for Complimentary Travel Insurance.
I checked my card transaction and it lists the airline and reservation number even though it was via Paypal so I believe this will suffice.
I will take everyones advice and confirm this with Zurich Assist.
      Thanks.

      • Please let us know what the outcome is - might be useful for future bookings.

  • I would get any advice in writing. If you speak to someone, ask them to email the results of that conversation whilst you wait and absolutely get their name. Also, important to consider where you travel to versus the risk you are prepared to take. If going to expensive medical cost areas, the risk that I would take it zero unless in writing.

  • Best thing to do would be to ask your bank. Even then if they say you're eligible I think I would be asking for confirmation of that in writing.

  • i was in the same boat a couple of weeks ago. torn in between paying $35 for a "credit card processing fee" for AirAsia and getting the comp travel insurance from creditcard, or paying through paypal with no fee - but risk not getting the insurance.

i just paid with the cc

  • Just spoke to Zurich Assist rep (Shaun/Sean?) and he confirmed that as long as the Platinum CC is linked to the Paypal account and the Paypal receipt clearly shows the flight booking, then I am entitled to the complimentary travel insurance.
Obviously, all the other spending criteria still applies, i.e. >$500 spend per traveller.

    • Does "the Paypal receipt clearly shows the flight booking" ??
Also, I just rang Zurich and they say that with Citibank travel insurance cover there is NO minimum spend. Also no age limit. But you must be paying for the outwards flight, and the return flight with the card. That has stuffed me up with my AirAsia bookings because I booked the coming back leg separately with my citibank debit card. Now I have to buy insurance. Damn! outsmarted myself.

  • Kiwires, As I said before I would get ALL this advice in writing, and email will do it. When it comes to an argument, a phone call will not cut it.

Peck, yes sadly all the trip must be on the cc to get the ins.

    • According to CITI'S CR. CARD INSURANCE T. & C.'s :-The cover is available up to 31 days for cardholders with a one-way overseas travel ticket or for travel
      of:
      • three (3) consecutive months or less for Gold
Card cardholders with return overseas travel
      tickets; or
      • six (6) consecutive months or less for Select
Card, Signature Card and Platinum Card
      cardholders with return overseas travel
      tickets.

  • I got an e-mail from my bank asking them to confirm by e-mail and they provided the standard response - Contact Zurich.
Unfortunately, there is no e-mail address for Zurich, only a phone number.
However, they did provide a link: http://www.zurich.com.au/content/zurich_au/individuals/credi…

  • Just revisiting this tread. I will call Zurich and confirm for my travels in September 2015 will be covered by my Citibank Signature Travel Insurance policy.

I have two tickets charged to the credit card. One directly (etihad) and one indirectly (PayPal).

26/04/2015 *AIRASIA X XXXXXX PAYPAL COM AU AUD 551.00
Etihad ticket still to hit CC.

Based on the above, it would seem that my CC statement clearly shows that the flight has been charged to the CC. How would you read this? Am I covered?

As a backup, I will also use my ANZ CC to book some accommodation. That card only needs $250 of travel to be put on the card to get comp insurance.

    • +1

When I rang Citibank, not long ago, they said that as long as the outwards journey is booked on the card, then you are covered. Even if paying via paypal.

      • Thanks for the prompt reply

      • I rang Citibank re travel insurance and they directed me to Zurich. Zurich answered my question. I wouldn't rely on Citibank.

    • Does the ANZ CC if paid via Paypal valid for travel insurance?

  • I would STILL get everything to do w' ins companies in written by email.

When you travel take your cc statement so that if you are lying in hosp with a broken something, you can phone the cc ins emergency number and tell them the details of the cc transaction to prove that you paid on the cc.

  • Macquarie Black Card allows payment using Paypal and be eligible for complimentary travel insurance. The payment should be using the credit card info linked to Paypal account
