Tinting Film On Car Tail Lights

I've recently noticed quite a few cars with their tail lights tinted. I have then searched eBay and seen that you can buy this film in dark smoke or light smoke. It is common sense that completely tinting your tail lights is illegal and dangerous, but what about a light coloured smoke tint? Can anyone shed light (excuse the pun) on this topic of tinting a car's tail lights and if it is legal to do so? I am in VIC.

Thanks.

any tinting, regardless of colour is illegal

whether you are picked up on it will depend on the cop

    EDIT: in nsw at least

  • An alternative to buying a film is a spray.

My friends have used the above to smoke their tail lights and indicators and you can adjust how light/dark you want to go.

As the above post advises though, it isn't legal (as are most car mods) and you run the risk of being pulled up for it by the police.

As the above post advises though, it ISN'T legal

      Typo?

      • No? I was agreeing with madmouse58 that tinting your lights isn't legal

Unless I've totally missed something =/

        • Jeez, sorry, I read what you'd typed as 'it isn't illegal.' Oops, sorry. Not enough coffee.

          It's all good.

Sorry if I came across as a little rude in my post, I was just a bit confused.

  • So how do the likes of Porsche get away with tinting their lights as an option?

    • how do lambos get away with being so low?

how do ferraris get away with exceeding the db limit?

      Answer: no idea

    • Big difference between stock and non stock. They will have to prove that the car still meets all regulations. If you do it yourself you can't do this.

    • Probably tested and certified these options as part of their ADR evidence pack?

Wouldn't surprised me at all…they have to justify the cost involved as ADR is crap which refute evidence that satisfy other certifying authorities ECE/DOT etc.\

Technically you could do whatever you want to your car which doesn't exceed what's allowed in the ADR along with your road authority of your state (ADR and state rules often conflict, have a look if you want) AND if you managed to find an engineer to certify it, Bob's your uncle.

    Why would you want too?

If someone runs into your rear then insurance won't pay you and the other driver can blame you and pursue a claim against you.

  • The old school way was to pull the cover off the light, give it a light spray of black spray paint until your desired level of "tint" then put them back on

The more coats, the darker it is

If I ever wanted to do this, I wouldn't pay $17 per can when a $2 can will do the same job

  • you can buy this stuff from aliexpress.com for US$4.90 delivered.

Forget it, it looks stupid and it is illegal.

A much better alternative is to save the $$$ and get some LED replacement lights and housing for your particular car model. Replace with LED globes that only shine colour when activated.

They look more fancy and won't get into the illegal realms of light tinting.

I have narrowly avoided a collision with a Falcon that had hideously dark tinting on the light lens… could hardly see the brake light coming on at all. Just as bad as having all brake lights out and no indication of braking lights anyway…

  • Another very easy and cheap (and easily reversible!) way of doing this is to get ladies stockings in black, pull out the tail light, and put the light into the stocking, tie up the end, cut off excess, and put the light back in.

Tinting on indicators grinds my gears.. i've had so many close calls due to dooche bags tinting there entire tail lights. to look cool NOT

  • Sounds like a good way to have a car accident IMO. Why dont you get like neon under your car or something, less accidenty and more awesome cool, yeah!
