I am trying to find a laptop for my brother who would just use it for basic uses such as power point, excel, word etc and not gaming.
My budget is around $400ish. Do you think I can get anything decent with this range ? I know I get 15% off dell (being NRMA member) and being Telstra Employee I might get some discounts which I don't really know but any who I would need a laptop within 2 weeks and prefer to buy locally rather than import from USA, China etc.

wait for a laptop deal to come up, plenty of good stuff around for $400. got an i5 e320 lenovo with 3G last time around for $380 after TRS last time
I'm travelling overseas in few weeks like 9th Dec need to buy one soon. Not sure when a bargain will come.
What are my options for now?
depending on how urgently you need it of course. laptop deliveries are usually fairly fast so you can afford to wait around for another 3 weeks or so and see if any deals comes up. failing that you'll just need to do the rounds on internet and brick and mortar shops to see which one is the cheapest if you need a laptop soon. TRS is a bonus

I bought a refurb asus from grays online. Took about 3 business days to deliver. Looked as good as new and ran perfectly fine. Dunno why oz bargain 3 guy above thinks asus are shit. I've always found them to be top notch. The other place you can check for a bargain laptop is dell outlet. For your purposes any laptop in the last 2 years should be fine.
What about a refurbished Asus? eg. http://www.oo.com.au/ASUS-X501A-XX036V-15-6-Versat_P180514C1… for $379, including freight. I bought one from oo.com recently and it's a beauty - almost like new.
There's heaps of them available at Online Computer also (http://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/index.php?sortcol=1&sortdir…), but I don't personally know what they're like to deal with (Whirlpool comments are generally favourable).
