  • What is a AMD R7-250 Graphics equal to in the old model numbering system?

      Equivalent to a 7750

I've reiterated this a lot, but a $99 graphics card in an $800 PC doesn't really meet the requirements to call that PC a "gaming" system. That PC would be more like an "all-rounder" rather than a gaming PC. For gaming PCs, the graphics card should be costing at least 25% of the total build cost, i.e. for an $800 PC, you should be spending at least $200 on the graphics card, if not more. I usually even suggest spending 33%.

Anyway, for a budget oriented gaming system, this would be my pick:

    CPU: x6 FX-6300 $129
    MOBO: AsRock 980DE3-U3S3 $69
    RAM: 8G Kit 1333 (Kingston) $86
    GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD7950 3GB OC Edition V3 $269
    Case/PSU: Thermaltake V4 with 500W PSU - $79
    Storage: Plextor M5S 256GB - $168

    Total - $800

Alternatively, opt for a Pentium G3320 if you are an Intel fan. These dual-core CPUs still hold up pretty well in gaming, especially if you're on a budget.

I'm not sure a 256GB SSD fits into a "budget orientated" system unless you have pre-existing storage you're planning to recycle. :o

      • +1

Yeah, I was tossing up on that one as well. In the end, I had three options I could go with

        1) 256GB SSD for $168
        2) 128GB SSD for $104 + 2TB HDD for $95 (which is just above the budget)
        3) Go with a Seagate SSHD drive

I was actually tempted by option 3, but I guess you could make a case for going option 2 as well. Personally though, everything I do fits onto a 120GB SSD, so I'm sure that an average gamer would be able to fit their Steam library and whatnot onto 256GB, but yeah.

        Edit - I didn't neg your comment, btw, it's a fair point :)

        • I'd go for SSD-only option as well. Can install ~10 modern games (15-20GB each) on a 256GB SSD.

I don't mean to advertise, but I found this guide quite useful for building gaming PC's: http://www.logicalincrements.com/. It does suggest getting HDD+SSD though, as apparently many people tend to need that much storage.

        • +2

          +1 for logical increments
          +1 for SSDs

    • +2

+1 for going cheap on the CPU & more on the GPU. My Intel G2020 + HD 7850 plays 90% of games on high (even plays BF3 on high)

    • +1

Yep, 30-50% on the GPU, if you'll do any gaming on it.

      • Completely agree, 50% is heaps for a budget system because it doesn't leave much headroom for everything else. But yeah, I always suggest at least a third for budget systems.

  • +1

    Meh

  • Can you please provide a price excluding the Graphics Card Please.

    • $679 without the graphics card. Will we add this option to our special now.

  • So in summary… no positive votes, can build cheaper yourself… No bargain here at all. Why did a PC "specialist" post this deal as a bragain in the first place?? Only a bit of a check with other suppliers will show this is No bargain at all. Pure advertising only.
